Areas of Interest
Areas of research interest are focused on innovative sustainable use of lignocellulosics. Specifically, we are seeking to develop new and improved applications for biomass, including biofuels and bioproducts, environmentally-friendly pulping and bleaching processes and recycled fiber. Achieving this goal requires research in several fundamental fields including lignin and carbohydrate chemistry, fiber characteristics, enzyme technologies; it also requires the use of sophisticated analytical tools.
Current research programs are directed at:
* Renewable Biofueles
* Modern Biorefineries
* Pre-extraction of hemicellulose prior to conventional Kraft pulping
* Chemical and enzymatic pretreatment of biomass to promote improved conversion to of cellulose to glucose
* Conversion of cellulosic mill byproducts to glucose/ethanol
* Advanced bleaching and pulping technologies
* Yield improvement in Kraft pulping
* Use of agricultural residues for papermaking fiber
Funding for our activities is provided by private industries, the Initiative for Renewable Energy and the Environment (IREE), the Department of Energy (DOE), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Minnesota Office of Higher Education, AES
