Augsburg Park Library

Augsburg Park Library has the ESL conversation Circle on Momdays from 6:15 -7:30 p.m. and TTYL (Teens, Technology, Youth , and Learning) programs on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays . We have volunteers working with K-5 students and paid tutors for 6-12.


Cedar Riverside Adult Education Collaborative

"The Cedar Riverside Adult Education Collaborative is a collaboration between three partner agencies: Riverside Plaza Tenants Association (RPTA), Brian Coyle Community Center, and Minneapolis Public Schools Adult Basic Education Program."

During the summer we hold English classes Monday- Thursday. Our class time are 9-12pm, 12:30-3pm, and 6-9pm.

Franklin Learning Center

Hmong American Mutual Assistance Association

The Hmong American Mutual Assistance Association (HAMAA) was incorporated in September, 1990, as a non-profit organization to serve all Hmong-American people in the Twin Cities with the mission to: 1) promote leadership in the Hmong Community; 2) promote educational advancement for Hmong youth and teens; 3) encourage Hmong refugees to be self-sufficient and contributing members of their Community, and; 4) promote and maintain Hmong cultural heritage.

Youth Empowerment Program for Teens (ages 11-21 years) is a program to reduce truancy and delinquency and develop employable skills among Hmong youth through career development skills, awareness of societal rules and values and diversion from delinquency, crime and youth gang activity by providing developmental activities.

(HCC) is to enhance the personal development of children, youth, and adults through Hmong Cultural education while providing resources that contribute to cross-cultural understanding between Hmong and non-Hmong people." A great place to learn about the culture and history at the same time working with the people. The site has classrooms, a library, and a cultural center filed with tools, artifacts and insturments. Plus experts to tell you all about Hmong Life and history. A great place to visit even if you are tutoring at another site!

Looking for classroom assistants in lower level English classes. Class times are Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 1:00pm and 4:00pm to 6:00 pm.

Educational services are available to adults who want to improve their basic skills, earn a GED, earn a high school diploma, prepare for employment or post-secondary education, or learn English."

Classroom assistants needed in various levels of English learning classes. Classes are held Monday through Friday 8:30am to 10:30 am, 10:30am to 12:30pm, 1:00pm to 3:00pm, 12:30pm to 2:30pm and 2:30pm to 4:30pm. Evening classes are held Monday though Thursday 5:00pm to 7:30pm and 7:30pm to 8:30pm.

International Institute of Minnesota

THE INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF MINNESOTA is an inter-racial, non-political, non-sectarian social service agency founded in 1919 to serve both foreign and native-born. It is affiliated with the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) and the United Way. The mission of the Institute is to: 1) provide a center for information and assembly for all nationalities and races; 2) develop fellowship and understanding among such persons through group meetings and activities; 3) promote the welfare of our foreign-born population and their families; and 4) preserve and stimulate inter cultural values. This mission is achieved through the following integrated programs: Refugee resettlement, Passport and U.S. immigration service photos, cross cultural counceling and Education. The Education classes are offered in an array of subjects including English as a second language, Nursing Assistant training, College readiness for medical careers, Medical Career Advancement project, Employment services and a refugee mentor program.

Volunteer in multiple programs including English as a second language classes, citizenship training or nursing assistant. Mock interviews are also held at this site on a twice a semester basis and can count for 3 hours of service.


Jane Adams School for Democracy

"Jane Addams School (JAS) is an initiative in democratic education. Our philosophy is that 'Everyone is a teacher and a learner'. Our mission is to free and cultivate the talents, cultures, and interests of ordinary people of diverse backgrounds and traditions, in order to add their energy and wisdom to the common public wealth. JAS is inspired by the vision of democracy, productive citizenship, and popular education held by settlement pioneers like Jane Addams, where people can come and work together to achieve their goals. JAS values are: Everyone is a teacher and a learner, we honor all cultures, citizenship means making contributions to the community, adults and children learn together and changes can happen when people work together."

There are learning circles and Dinner and Dialogue at JAS on Mondays and Wednesdays, 6-9 p.m.(you are required to attend one night a week.) There is a Hmong Circle, an East African Circle, and a Spanish Circle, In the circles there is a cultural exchange discussion (with translation) the first part of the night. Then learning pairs (of college student and immigrant adult) work to prepare for the citizenship test, literacy learning, computer skills, conversation, social action and collaborative projects.

This is a 30 hour commitment.


Lao Family English School

"The Lao Family Community English Education program offers a full range of learning opportunities for the limited English-proficient, including many adults preliterate in their native languages."

Classroom assistants needed. Morning classes are from 8:30am to 12:30pm for adults and preschoolers. Afternoon classes are for adults only from 12:30pm to 4:30pm. Evening classes for adults and children are from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Students may have the opportunity to lead a small breakout group.


Lincoln Adult Education Center

"LAEC is an Adult Basic Education (ABE) program that teaches mostly English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adult immigrants and refugees. We also have several math classes, a citizenship class, and are involved with workforce ESL classes."

Classroom assistants needed for various levels of English classes. Classes are Monday through Thursday 9:00am to 12:00pm, 1:00pm to 4:00pm and 5:30 to 8:30pm and Fridays from 9:00am to 12:00pm.


Metro North Adult Basic Education

"Adult Basic Education offers adults in Anoka County GED or high school diploma instruction, brush up on basic skills, English as a second language instruction, citizenship, family literacy opportunities, and work internships."

Sites in Blaine, Brooklyn Center,Forest Lake, and Columbia Heights. Openings and available times vary by site. Work for 2.5 hours- 3 hours per week. for 8 weeks. Start before October 1st.

Minneapolis Public Schools Adult Basic Education

"Minneapolis Public Schools Adult Basic Education offers English classes to adult students. There are also basic computer skills taught as part of the ESL training. Citizenship classes and GED classes are also available."

Classroom assistants needed. Classes are at different Minneapolis public schools including Lehmann Center, Anderson, Pratt and Northside Adult Basic Education. Program hours: M-F 8:30 am - 11:45 am, M-TH 12:30 - 3:00 pm, M-TH 6:30 pm-9:00 pm. Look at their website for possible openings.

This is a 30 hour commitment Must attend a site orientation (other arrangements may be possible).


Minnesota Internship Charter School

The Minnesota Internship Center partners with communities and learners to achieve academic, career, and life success. The Minnesota Internship Center Charter School is open to all, but seeks to enroll students who have not fared well in traditional high schools and alternative settings. The target age group is 16 through 20. By building learning plans within the context of their own personal/career interests our students have renewed hope for the future.

* help students develop English language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing * listen to students read * review grammar and spelling assignments * play language games and puzzles, and * reinforce classroom learning * help students build their skills in math, science and social studies.

English as a Second Language Classroom Tutors support the healthy development of immigrant youth by helping them to build skills and confidence in English, math, science and social studies. ESL tutors work one-on-one in the classroom or assist a teacher with small group instruction. You do not need to know a foreign language to volunteer! Training and materials are provided


Minnesota Literacy Council Learning Center Lake Street

Minnesota Literacy Council Learning Center Northeast

The center has a large library of educational materials, as well as computers and software to assist adult students and volunteer tutors.

ESL classes are offered Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

The MLC Learning Center in Northeast Minneapolis relies on volunteers to tutor individuals and teach small groups. We are always seeking committed individuals who want to make a difference by becoming a volunteer tutor


Neighborhood House

"Neighborhood House is a multicultural, multilingual community center with programming for all ages and open doors for all people and is often a first stop for new immigrants and refugees."

Classroom assistants needed. May do one-on-one work with students who need individual attention. English learning classes are held weekdays from 11:00am to 1:00pm, 5:45pm to 7:15pm (except Wednesdays) and 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

Requires a quarter commitment


New Americans Center Minneapolis Public Library

"Located in Central Library of the Minneapolis Public Library system, the New Americans Center provides volunteer-led conversation circles and other language programming; materials and software for self-directed study of the English language; brochures, books, web links, and referral information about housing, education, childcare, employment, health, social services, transportation, legal aid, and cultural issues; citizenship study and preparation materials; as well as speakers, workshops and other special events."

Facilitate English-language conversation circles. The commitment is two hours/week, which includes one to two hours of conversation-circle facilitation and up to one hour for connecting with patrons individually (could include one-on-one tutoring), filling out the volunteer workbook, conducting limited research (usually computer-based), or completing any other tasks related to conversation circles or to the New Americans Center. Tuesdays from 4pm to 6pm and Wednesday from 4pm to 6pm. Conversation Circles are also held at other Libraries including: East Lake Library, 2727 East Lake Street, Tuesday 6:30-8pm, Northeast Library, 2200 Central Ave NE, Tuesday 5:30-7:30, and the Franklin Library 1314 East Franklin Street Saturday 11:30am-1pm.

Attend the once-per-semester teacher meeting.


Osseo Adult Basic Education

Somali Education Center

"The Somali Education Center is a non- profit organization that provides homework assistance , one-on-one and small group tutoring to minority and immigrant children. SEC also offers Adult Basic Education in English as a Second Language, workforce training, and GED preperation.

One-on-one tutoring available. After school homework help center opens at 4pm Monday through Thursday. Must attend a site oreintation Summer Schedule: Our summer program runs July 7th - 31st, Mon thru Thurs from 8-1pm. I can work with students to determine a schedule that fits for them.

A background check maybe required.

"South Suburban Adult Basic Education (SSABE) offers skill-building classes and services at sites in South St. Paul, West St. Paul and Inver Grove Heights. Part of a statewide network, SSABE provides basic education for adult aged 16 and over who are not currently enrolled in secondary school. Adult Basic Education (ABE) strives to assist adults in building basic skills for success in work and life."

Classroom assistants needed. Tutoring locations include West St.Paul, South St.Paul and Inver Grove Heights. Days and times available vary by site.Fridays, 10:30am - noon at our South St. Paul site Monday, Tuesday or Friday, some time between 9am - noon, at our West St. Paul site Tuesdays, 5:30-8:30pm at our Inver Grove Community College site


The English Learning Center

The English Learning Center's classes promote self-sufficiency in adult immigrants and refugees through instruction in English as a second language (ESL), Math, Computer Skills, and Citizenship Preparation. Our volunteer- taught classes focus on adult learners' real life needs, preparing them to communicate more effectively at home, in the workplace, in their communities in addition assisting them in learning to interpret the culture of the United States.

Volunteer once a week for duration of the semester. ESL Volunteer hours: M,T,W,Th 5:45-8:45pm; Class hours: 6:45-8:30pm. Citizenship Tutor Volunteer hours: M,T 4:30-6:30pm; Class hours:5:30-6:30pm Citizenship Volunteers: Assist a group of 5-15 adult immigrants and refugees in preparing for their citizenship exam Curriculum and materials provided by the ELC and by staff members. English as a second language volunteers lead a class of 10-15 adult immigrants and refugees in learning English. Books with lesson plans, materials (visuals, tapes, realia, etc.), and additional resources provided by the ELC and by staff members. Somali Speaking Volunteer also needed for math help.
