Vo Lam Kung Fu is a traditional martial art that developed over 3,000 years ago. It blends techniques typically seen in hard styles such as karate with techniques usually found in soft styles, such as breathing and internal power generation. Our school has been teaching Vo Lam Kung Fu on campus for over 20 years, and we have developed a curriculum of basic techniques that most students can complete in 4 to 5 years.
Vo Lam Kung Fu, in practice, is very vigorous and physically demanding. The system stresses the importance of fundamentals, with an emphasis on deep, strongly rooted stances and efficient fluid movements. Using these fundamentals the practitioner advances to learn techniques of increasing complexity without forfeiting practicality. From there the practitioner learns forms, fighting and techniques that can be applied to self defense. Students at all belt levels practice together to create a communal class atmosphere that benefits all members. The goal of our club is to teach the proper form and function of our system’s techniques and how to apply them in a variety of practical applications. We do not free spar. Instead we teach techniques and forms that fit together, matching the striking techniques of one form to the blocking techniques of another, so that students learn how to apply their new skills in a safe, controlled environment. Ultimately the Vo Lam practitioner improves their strength, control, speed focus, power, balance, flexibility, endurance, confidence, humility and versatility.
If you are interested in learning a traditional martial art, building your confidence, getting a great workout, or just finding an outlet to release tension, Vo Lam Kung Fu may be perfect for you! You can contact us at volam@umn.edu, but the best way to learn about our club is to come in and see for yourself. We practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9pm in Cooke Gym 308. The gym is accessible entering the Recreation center on the East Bank and crossing the skyway on the third floor.
