Robbins Genealogical Collection

Robbins Genealogical Society

The LDS Family History Library has a microfilm (#1036069) of the "Robbins Genealogical Collection". The first frame in this film is a typewritten letter on Robbins Genealogical Society letterhead, imploring recipients to send in their family histories to Burtis F. Robbins, M.D., F.A.C.S, President of the Society, located at 403-6 Medical Arts Building / Salt Lake City, 1, Utah. It is undated, but I would guess it would be from the late 1940's. It begins:

About one hundred years ago a Mr. Isaac Gilbert Robbins living in Boston had an earnest desire to learn whence he came. After gathering what information he could near home he then searched early records in the New England and eastern states for anyone by the name of Robbins landing in America. The following and many others were found: Mr. Obedience Robbins who came in 1621 to the eastern shores of Virginia; a brother Edward followed 14 years later and located on the shores of Chesapeak Bay; Nicholas appears at Cambridge in the Massachusetts colony about 1635; Richard at Charleston in 1638 later removed to Cambridge; John located at Weathersfield in Connecticut, and about the same time, another John located in Branford; Samuel from Theddingsworth, England settled in Salisbury, Mass.; William, probably from Ireland, located at Boston; Robert appears at Concord in 1666, and at the same time George at Chelmsford; another William is first found in Reading, Mass., in 1675; another John is found at Eastham on Cape Cod; etc.

Beginning with these names, by research and corresponding throughout America he completed or nearly completed all of these various lines down to about the seventh or eighth generations or until the time of his death in 1902. [=== Ed. Note: Skipping history of name. ===]

About fifty years ago Mr. William A. Robbins, a very eminent attorney and genealogist now living in Brooklyn, N. Y., became interested in the Robbins genealogy and has spent independently and in connection with I. Gilbert Robbins and Eugene H. Robbins of Pittsfield, Mass., a large part of his life together with his wife in augmenting and adding to the records of I. Gilbert Robbins by searching through early court and church records, etc., throughout the eastern United States and Europe.

All these vast Robbins records have been recently obtained from Mr. Robbins who is unable to carry on this work due to his age and ill health, with the understanding that we complete the records as fast as possible, especially the later generations, and prepare them for publication. During the past twenty-five years our organization here has also done a great deal of research so that we now have some fifty thousand authentic Robbins names. [=== Ed. Note: Skipping remainder of letter imploring people to send in their family histories. ===]

Well - bless ol' Isaac Gilbert Robbins! He has saved our collective butts! 50,000 people with Robbins surnames! Isaac was born 26 Nov 1835 in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts to Isaac Haile ROBBINS and Sarah Rowell TUCKER. I don't know anything more about him 'cause I didn't think to try to find his own line in his manuscripts.

His manuscripts have excellent detail, including exact birthdates and spouses names (and often, the marriage date). Oftentimes, the spouse's birth date and place and even parents' names were also given.

Sadly, for the discerning genealogist, there are almost no sources given for the vital statistics. I believe this is because these are contemporary family histories or recently handed-down family histories acquired through his correspondence. The personal detail included in some of these entries (like the fact that my 3rd-gr-grandfather, b. 1778, was 6 ft. 4 in. tall) are not what you'd expect from dry, boring, town or church records.

Apparently, the Society disbanded without ever publishing a book, and the Utah Genealogical Society acquired the collections which were microfilmed by the LDS.

There are 14 items on the film:

  1. "English notes on the Robbins Family" - by Charles H. Pope? 21 pp.

George Robbins in Chelmsford, Mass., 1666, Brother of Robert

NOTE: James R. Marsh has an excellent page on George Robbins and his immediate children. His very detailed information comes primarily from:

"Untangling the Evidence for Two Early Massachusetts Robbins Families: George of Chelmsford (1657) and Robert of Concord (1671)" by Eleanor Robbins Sprague and Andrew West Robbins, New England Historical and Genealogical Register, October 1997, pages 388-390

[UPDATE 20-Jan-2001] The family tree data from this article has been transcribed and is part of the "sapeel" GEDCOM at WorldConnect. Here is the entry for George Robbins of Chelmsford.

I have transcribed the first four pages of the George Robbins in Chelmsford manuscript (item #8) to show the detail that Isaac provided, plus additional relevant pages from items #8 and #10 to document my line.

The transcriptions are formatted just as the manuscript is - misaligned columns, misspellings, and all. No corrections have been attempted.

CAUTION!  ALWAYS VERIFY!
I did, and found out that the will of John Robbins did not list William as an heir. So William is not a child of John and Sarah. So beware! The information is not neccesarily accurate.

Should anyone else rent this film at the LDS and want to transcribe the pages for their lines and send them to me, I'll add them.

Netscape keeps information within a table together on a page if it can, so I have used that to persuade it to start a new page if the next manuscript "page" can't fit on the current page. These pages print very nicely using Netscape v4.7 with the following settings:

Enjoy!

George the father was a house-wright,-owner at times of much real
estate and manifested considerable of interest in public affairs.

Oonamog was ruler of Marlborough and Sachem;- he died 1674 and the
troubles of the war fell heavily upon his family. A barn, with corn and
hay was burned at Chelmsford, by some of the war party as it afterward
proved, but the act was evidently accused upon the Indians and a deter-
mination was formed to make them suffer for it. About fourteen men
armed themselves and under pretense of scouting, went to the wig-wams of
the Wamesits, ordered them out and fired upon them, wounding five and
killing one of the young son of Tahatooner and among the wounded was
Sarah, widow of Oonamog, daughter of Sagamore John who lived at the same
place before the war and was a great friend to the english.
Sarah had two husbands, first Oonamog and second Tahatooner, son of
Tahattawan, Sachem of Musketaquid. The shooting occurred 15 Nov 1675
and two of the party were largin and Robbins who were shown to have fired
their guns loaded with shot, into the crowd. They were arrested but not
convicted and after an extended detention were set at Liberty.
