Newb F.A.Q!
U-Swing is the only university club dedicated specifically to swing dancing. Our goal is to teach the basics of swing dancing to anyone interested and move from these basics to more advanced concepts and moves.
Does U-SWING Cost Anything?
No. U-Swing is completely free and will continue to be so. That said, we do, on occasion, make T-shirts and attend SwingFests, swing competitions, or go dancing at local venues - most of these will cost you something. All these activities can be considered "extracurricular" and are completely optional - although we can guarentee they will be fun and improve your dancing.
Do I need to bring a partner?
No. If you don't have a partner, U-Swing will have someone for you to dance with. Many people join U-Swing not only to dance, but to meet new people as well. During the course of a night, you'll have the opportunity to dance with many people, whether or not you brought someone with you. If you'd like to bring a partner with you that's great! For reasons we dancers don't understand, guys don't seem to be as amiable to dancing as girls - so, ladies, feel free to hit one over the head and drag him along, he'll thank you later.
Do I have to be a student at the university?
No. Members of U-Swing can be students or non-students.
What should I wear?
Something Comfortable. While dancing in your best flapper dress or newest zuit suit is fun, it's more important that you can move freely. If you want to dress up that's totally fine, but remember that you will be moving a lot and getting very warm! For those of you who don't want to dress up, a common outfit at U-Swing is a t-shirt, jeans, and tennis shoes.
Do I need to bring anything with?
Maybe. While you don't need to bring anything with, you might consider bringing along your dance shoes if you have some. This is especially true if you'll be dancing on an actual dance floor - street shoes can destroy a fine surface. Since swing dancing can be an aerobic activity and leave you sweating, a spare shirt for walking home with might be a good idea (especially in the winter).
