These directions are what I (Ben R) currently find to be the best way to get to the track, not the shortest by 1 or 2 miles, but there is little traffic and the road are mostly good:

First, and this will depend on your starting location, get yourself to 29th Ave NE, which runs east-west and intersects any of these major (bikeable) routes north (from West to East): Central Ave (not recommended), Fillmore St, St. Anthony Pkwy (take a right on Silver Lake Rd NE for a shortcut), and Stinson Pkwy.

Go east on 29th until you almost get to the intersection with New Brighton Blvd. Right before the traffic light, there is a little footpath that gets you across the grass strip so you can get to the very beginning of Old Highway 8 (foothpath not shown on this map):

Take this Old Highway 8 all the way north (a long way: parallel to New Brighton, 35W, 10, across 694) until you reach the T with County Road H W, which marks the end of Old Highway 8.

Take a left on County Road H W, then a right on Long Lake Road (first stop sign):

Take Long Lake Road all the way north until it curves and turns into N County Line Road. Take a right turn on 93rd Lane Ext NE across Highway 10 and along the Anoka County Airport:

93rd Lane curves along the airport and takes you back towards Central Ave. One block before Central (gas station), take a right to ride the frontage road along Central Ave. This is not shown on Mapquest because the road goes over airport territory.

You will hit 99th Ave NE, take a right, then a left on Davenport St NE, which will take you right by the velodrome:

From the Dunn Bros. on University and 6th Ave SE, this is almost exactly 16 miles, the perfect warm-up ride.
