Spring Break 2009

Van 2 mounted an heroic chase, but couldn't quite reel in the first van before reaching Eureka Springs. ES is a really old vacation spot in NW Arkansas, full of natural springs and bath houses. The town is loaded with Victorian and natural stone homes from well beyond the turn of the century. That also means that it is a tourist trap to end all. After getting burned at a couple of local eateries, the team has found some good, solid locations to chow down.
The first ride on Saturday was a quick light spin in a cold drizzle; not pleasant but necessary.
The Hells Kitchen RR was a nice race to show all the newbies how tough bike racing can be. Everyone did well considering their abilities, and the team took 2nd in the 3's race, with the top three passing the 1/2 field.
Tuesday's warm down ride turned into a 'where the hell am I' ride, as EVERY group got lost in some form, and called for an extraction of two groups to avoid anyone getting hurt. Wednesday was the now traditional 'Jasper Disaster' . We rolled out of Kingston backwards this year for about 4 miles and then back to get a warmup before the first climb. The first climb selected the groups and the 2nd group found the 1st at Jasper and sat and replenished before the haul back. The climbs back were very exposed and the temp was in the high 70's, making for a grueling 4th climb, and the surprise 5th climb near the end of the out and back wasn't looked favorably on by the riders. It lightly rained Thursday morning, but it was a sleep in morning anyway, so everyone got some light recovery and TT work in the afternoon. Team meeting tonight, with a group leaving for Iowa tomorrow to score team and individual points Saturday and Sunday. The remaining riders will finish up with another hard day and a recovery day before packing up on Sunday. The vans should both arrive sometime early evening on Sunday.
