Aero Equipment Banned in Collegiate Cycling?
11/04/09 at 10:23:52

Hey Guys-
I just got this in an e-mail from my new school's cycling team... I am thinking this applies to the NCCCC as well as to my conference, so you might want to follow up on it yourselves.  Frankly I think it sounds like a major bummer, since I know a few of you have put a lot of energy/time/money into acquiring aero gear.

Rule Change Resolution 7: Aero Equipment

Rule 7J is added to the rule book, bumping the rules following down a letter (Rule 7J will become 7K, 7K will become 7L, etc).

7J. Equipment

7J1. Bicycles
(a) Bicycles used in competition in all Collegiate Road Events must conform
with the current UCI and USAC regulations for mass-start legal bicycles.

(b) No handlebar extensions, including "aero bars," or other forms of bars

offering forearm support shall be allowed.

7J2. Wheels

(a) Wheels used in competition in all Collegiate Road Events must conform
with UCI mass-start legal regulations. The UCI maintains a website with the

information of approved wheels.

7J3. Helmets
(a) Helmets worn at Collegiate Road Events must meet both UCI and USAC regulations
for mass-start legal, and be worn in accordance with USAC rules.

'Mass start' are the key words here, I believe. TT and TTT won't be impacted. There were cases where riders were leaving arm rests on their bars and a few cases of radical aero wheels.

It only says "mass-start" when specifying the equipment.  It says "collegiate road events" when specifying the races.

The rest of the e-mail, which I forgot to copy and paste, said that TT events WERE effected by this new rule.

On the up side, now I don't have to put time/money into getting aero gear to avoid being blown off the back by Brain.

EDIT: instantly blow off the back

The latest update confirms the change. I don't agree with it, and I sent an email stating this. Limiting use of aero equipment does nothing to advance the sport and may even keep riders from actively progressing to tri and the velodrome. Bad decision, even if it was made for fairness in competition.

For 2010, all "non-A" categories (B, C, D, E) are required to adhere to the
requirements for mass-start-legal equipment in all Collegiate Cycling Races
including individual and team time trials.

For 2011, all categories, including A, will be required to use mass-start
equipment in all Collegiate Cycling Races including individual and team time
 trials.

Hmm, so A's can still rock aero equipment?  Sweet.

Sorry Sean.
