Trainer Suggestions?
10/07/09 at 15:05:48

Hi All,

First off it was nice meeting some of you at the meeting.

But I don't know too much about trainers and was hoping someone could give me some suggestions.

I have been thinking about the cycleops jetfluid pro, but I'm not brave enough to make a decision yet

http://www.saris.com/p-356-jetfluid-pro.aspx

Also, I have a polar heart rate monitor but it isn't ANT+
Should I be looking for a new one or doesn't it matter?

Thanks!

Mark

Cyclops makes good trainers.  Jetfluid is new I think so I cant say much about it.  Alternately, the trainer that will last a lifetime is Kurt Kinetic.  In the same price range.  The Kinetic is a fluid trainer like the cyclops but with an extra large flywheel which adds inertia for spin-down so the wheel doesn't stop instantly when you stop peddling.  Also I believe the fluid capsule is completely enclosed and driven magnetically so you don't have to worry about fluid leakage when the o-ring wears out.

The trainer suggestions are both good. Get fluid or gel, never air. Heavy, solid, smooth and quiet are good words when it comes to trainers; they will make you light and fast. Don't go out and buy a HRM yet until we see how the sponsorship situation goes. Any old thing you have hanging around will be good enough for now.

Depending on my condition in a few weeks, my trainer is potentially for borrow or loan. Also going to be in england next semester and I can't really bring it with me. its a cyclops mag trainer. Been using it for 2 years and it works quite well.

Rollers!  It's what all the cool kids are doing.  Trainers are lame.  It's more exciting when you can fall off.

I love rollers and use them all the time, but for winter training your first purchase should be a trainer, unless you get a roller with a resistance unit.

Also, is a trainer tire a smart idea or are they a joke?

Just use some old crap tire you have hanging around.  It really doesn't matter as long as it's smooth.

Some internet sales on Kurt Kinetic trainers. These are free shipping. Check at One On One to see how much they would be before buying internet though.
