Here is how it all started...

1957

  • The University of Minnesota Mens Crew was founded by Oliver Bogen, Lloyd Ohme, and Dr. Charles Good.
  • The crew rows out of the Minneapolis Rowing Club's facility on the Mississippi and uses their equipment as well as donated equipment from the University of Wisconsin.
  • Oliver Bogen coaches his first of eight years 1957-1964

1961

  • University crews train at the Minnesota Boat Club in St Paul.

1964

  • University of Minnesota Crew hosts its first intercollegiate regatta April 25th on the Mississippi against St Thomas and Kansas St.
  • Minnesota beats Kansas St by 1.5 lengths over a 1U2 mile race in Souix City, IA.

1965

  • Dr. Charles Good Coaches resumes coaching and continues for eight additional years.
  • Dr. Paul F. Dwan donates a Pocock 8+ and 1 set of oars.
  • Minnesota travels to race a duel against Kansas St.

1966

  • Minnesota hosts a duel against Purdue. Minnesota won the V8 by 1U2 length, but Purdue evened the duel by winning the F8.
  • Minnesota, Kansas St, and St Thomas race in St Paul in a triangular regatta.
  • Minnesota competes in the Mid-America Collegiate Rowing association [MACRA] regatta in Marietta, OH, for the first time.

1967

  • Minnesota split a duel regatta against Kansas St whose V8 and Minnesota's JV8 were the victors in their respective events.

1968

  • VL8 places 2nd at MACRA regatta.

1969

  • VL8 and F8 place 2nd at MACRA regatta.

1971

  • Crew rows from Minneapolis to Minnesota City near Winona for a fundraiser.

1973

  • Dr. Arthur Erdman is named head coach.
  • University of Minnesota lightweights rowing for the Minneapolis Rowing Club win the Canadian Henley Men's Lightweight 8+.
  • Minnesota participates in the inaugural Midwest Rowing Championships in Madison, WI.
  • The VL4+ wins gold, and the VL8 and Open 4+ win silver.

1974

  • Washington St edges Minnesota's VL8 by 2 feet for the Midwest Championship
  • Boathouse was a quantsut hut on the river flats. Most every rower rowed at Mpls club in the summer. Spring training was performed in Florida. Minnesota raced against FIT, Tampa... One of the regatta sites was Cypress Gardens. Also, duels were raced against Grand Valley State. During this period the team owned one 8+, the '65 Paul Dwan.

1975

  • Minnesota crews secure 1U2 of a scrap metal storage building to use as a boathouse.

1977

  • The V4+ wins 1st of 3 gold medals in 4 years at the Midwest Rowing Championships in Madison, WI.
  • The V4+ wins Minnesota's first Dad Vail medal, a silver.
  • Tom Perry & Dan Bryant win : US National Championship 2-, Intermediate 2-, Elite 2-.
  • Tom Perry and Tim Murphy take over for the departing Dr Erdman as coaches for the crew.

1978

  • Minnesota places 11th of 44 in the Championship 4+ at the Head of the Charles

1979

  • As a fundraiser for a new 8+, the team rowed from Minneapolis, MN to La Crosse, WI, a distance of 100 miles.

1980

  • The current boathouse was established. Spring training was held at FIT. The coaching launch was stolen from the boathouse, but John Pillsbury and Jim Binger's donations allowed the program to replace the launch.
  • Mac Good rowed for NYAC which producee the LW8 that was the USA rep.
  • The V4 & VL4 both win the first [known] gold medals for Minnesota at the Dad Vail Regatta.
  • Bill Donoho and Bill Theisse win the pair at Canadian Henley.
  • Minnesota wins the Bud Poe Cup at the Waterloo Open Regatta.

1983

  • Bill Donoho '80 wins bronze medal at PanAm games with John Jablonic.
  • Ben 'Kip' Ballou coaches the 1983 season

1984

  • Lee Fielder begins coaching 1984-1989
  • Minnesota's places at the Head of the Schuykill in Philadelphia:
  • V8 28th V4+ 13th VL4+ 14th

1985

  • Minnesota Lightweight 4+ wins gold medal at Dad Vail Regatta

1986

  • Rich Taschek rowed his single 2,300 miles from Minneapolis to New Orleans to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House.
  • The Linac Laboratory is demolished and the crew loses its indoor training facilities.

1987

  • First Minnesota medal at the IRA regatta in Syracuse, NY. The V4+'s won the bronze medal.
  • The Schoenbrod 4+ training shell is stolen from the boathouse grounds and the suspects were seen and reported to police, but the shell was never returned.

1988

  • Jim Kent qualifies for the CRASH B World indoor rowing championships in Boston.

1989

  • First entry in the San Diego Crew Classic.

1990

  • Thomas Altenhofen becomes head coach.

1991

  • Minnesota's first freshman entry at IRA's takes a silver in the F4+.

1992

  • Minnesota wins its 1st Freshman event F4+ at the Midwest Championships.

1993

  • Minnesota wins Dad Vail F4+ and takes Silver in the F4+ at IRA's.
  • Minnesota F4+ sets IRA course record 6:26.1.

1996

  • Minnesota's V4+ posts undefeated season [6-0]
  • [Heart of Texas, Great Plains Championships, Midwest Championships, Dad Vail, IRA, and National Championships (Cincinnati)]
  • Minnesota's F4+ wins Midwest Championships and sets the course record 6:14.4

1997

  • The V4+ successfully defends its IRA National Championship and goes on to represent the University of Minnesota at the Royal Henley where they advanced to the quarter finals before losing to Germany.
  • The V4+ places 7th in the Championship 4+ at the Head of the Charles.
  • Michael Wherley ('94) wins World Championship in the USA 8+.

1998

  • Minnesota's first year of competition in the Merril Lynch "Big 10" Regatta in Indianapolis. Win F4+, VL4+, and V4+.
  • The V4+ wins its third straight gold medal at the IRA National Championship.
  • Michael Wherley ('94) defends World Championship in the USA 8+.
  • Win four events at the Head of the Chattahoochee: Champ 8, Champ 4, Pair, Freshman 4

1999

  • Defend the F4+, VL4+, and V4+ titles at the Merril Lynch "Big 10" Regatta in Indianapolis.
  • Michael Wherley ('94) wins third straight World Championship in the USA 8+.
  • Win three events at the Head of the Chattahoochee: Freshman 8, Freshman 4, and Light 4

2000

  • Freshman 8+ takes silver at Dad Vails
  • Open 4+ takes bronze at IRA's
  • Michael Wherley ('94) named to the USA 4- for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. USA Men's 4- places 5th.
  • Michael Wherley named US Rowing Athlete of the Year.

2001

  • Varisty 4+ takes silver at Dad Vails
  • Freshman 4+ captures Minnesota's 13th Dad Vail Title
  • Varsity 4+ places 5th at IRA's
  • Freshman 4+ wins IRA Gold, Minnesota's 4th National IRA Championship title
  • Mike Wherley wins gold at Princeton World Cup Regatta in the US men's 8+
  • Todd Beyreuther wins silver at Princeton World Cup Regatta in the US men's 4x

2002

  • Varisty 4+ takes Minnesota's Sixth V4+ Dad Vail title
  • Freshman Light 8+ captures Minnesota's 15th Dad Vail overall title
  • Five crews advance to the Dad Vail Grand Finals : V4+, VL4+, pair, F8, FL8
  • Minnesota places 2nd in total Dad Vail Team Points
  • Mike Wherley wins gold at Princeton World Cup Regatta in the US men's 8+
  • Minnesota Alumni 8+ places 5th at IRA's.
  • Minnesota Men's Crew places five crews at IRA's : V4+, Open 4+. F4+, F8, pair

2003

  • IRA - Open 4 wins Minnesota's 5th IRA title
  • Dad Vails: V8 4th, JV8 3rd, Lighweight 8 6th, Freshmen 2nd
  • V8 and Jv 8 second place at Indianapolis
  • Matt Rich (97) Wins World Champ in 2+ in Italy
  • Mike Wherley (97) Silver in the US 8

2004

  • IRA: Bronze medal in second varsity eight
  • V8: 7th, 2V8 4th, Lightweight 8 5th
  • V8 and Jv 8 second place at Indianapolis Lightweight 4th
  • Mike Wherley's Second Olympic games - 10th place in 4-

2005

  • Dad Vail V8 5th, Freshmen 6th
  • Indy: canceled due to weather
