UPA Terminus Webpage results: http://www.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=18&id=3235 Grey Duck went South for the Terminus Championships on March 10-11 in Atlanta, Georgia. While the spunky Minnesota squad would certainly show the effects of a long winter (some fatigue, some turnovers, some very pale skin), they put in a fine showing, advancing all the way to the semi-finals before falling to a strong Georgia squad. Saturday: Minnesota would begin the tournament by notching one of the biggest wins in the club’s history, beating perennial national contender North Carolina State 11-10. It was a hard fought, turnover plagued game, but in the end, Kyle Gill would rise over two NC State defenders, pull down the disc, and toe the end-zone line for the win. Grey Duck would take control early against Colorado State, riding two three point runs to an 8-4 halftime lead. It was a physical game, and as Minnesota pulled away, tempers flared during a tightly contested play on an ill-advised CSU throw. Other ill-advised CSU activities (often resembling a poorly staged professional wrestling match) followed, but when the dust cleared, Minnesota was on top 13-8. The next opponent, Pittsburgh, had defeated Grey Duck at CCC in the fall, and though the Grey Duck offense began flawlessly, it was only 3-3 in the early going. The defense clamped down after that, and with the game tied 5-5, Minnesota would go on a four point run and establish a 9-5 lead. Pitt mounted a couple of second half surges, but would not be able to recover, and Minnesota would move to 3-0 on the day with a 13-11 win. Despite their success, Grey Duck had been plagued at different times during the day by turnovers. They had worked hard for their points. Now, facing Wisconsin, the top team in the nation, they appeared a bit ragged and fatigued. They would show signs of life, but would be unable to muster any consistent resistance to Madison’s powerful attack, falling 6-13. Sunday: Sunday began with another CCC rematch against Michigan Sate. Minnesota would again come out on top, controlling play from the beginning with methodic offense and aggressive defense. In the end, Minnesota 15, Michigan State 10. A lot of players stepped up with wonderful performances throughout the weekend, but Terminus 2007 may best be remembered for Calvin Tam. His unrelenting deep cutting punished opponents, this was apparent against a tough Central Florida squad, where he and Jerod Johnson would combine to score 7 goals and notch 3 assists en route to a 14-10 victory and a berth in the semi-finals against the University of Georgia. Despite an early 1-3 deficit, Minnesota would hang tough with a very good Georgia squad. A feisty sky-D by Mike Arenson on a Georgia huck would earn Minnesota their first break and tie the game at 5-5. The teams essentially traded points to 9-9, when Grey Duck’s inexperience against top level teams began to show. Georgia would take advantage of Minnesota turnovers to go on a 4-1 run and seal the victory, 15-11. In all, it was an excellent first step for Grey Duck as they build momentum for the Championship Series. Minnesota proved they were able to play with high-caliber teams, and also showed that that there was plenty of room for improvement as they build confidence and experience over the next two months. -CY Kyle to Andy to Kevin to Kyle to Calvin for the easy score.
