UsTau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society, was founded in 1885 by Dr. Edward H. Williams Jr. while a professor at Lehigh University to recognize students of distiniguished scholarship and exemplary character. Now with 420,000 initiated members, the society has 220 collegiate chapters and 13 active alumnus chapters. Tau Beta Pi has a world-wide reputation because of its high standards for membership. Its members include five Craper prize winners, seven postage stamp honorees, nine winners of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, 15 Nobel laureates, 33 recipients of the National Medal of Technology, 25 honorees in the National Inventors Hall of Fame, 42 astronauts, 69 recipients of the National Medal of Science, hundreds of members of the National Academy of Engineering, hundreds of coporate CEOs, three state govenors, and even a few Olympic athletes and NFL football players. Tau Beta Pi's headquarters is located at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The national Convention, held in a different city each year, governs the Association through 300 representatives from collegiate chapters and a few national offices. Happening?
Our fall project, Kits for Kids, raised over $2,000. Below, you can see what types of toys we bought from our receipts. Lego. Discovery Channel 1 and 2. Air Traffic. Tau Beta Pi nationally grants undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships laureate awards, educational loans, and leadership training. Chapter projects emphasize our objectives of recognizing outstnading engineering students and professionals, encouraging engineers to participate in the college, the community, and in non-technical fields. The Fellowship program has awarded $2,985,000 in stipends for graduate study. The Student Loan Program has provided $700,000 in educational loans. The Laureate Program has made grants of $2,500 to 41 students who have excelled in extracurricular activites. The Engineering Futures Program provides trained instructors to teach interpersonal and leadership development skills to 1,500 students annually. Come visit us at office hours. On 220 campuses across the country, Tau Beta Pi chapters honor their fellow students by inviting them to join the nation's second-oldest honor society. Membership does not end with graduation, but represents a lifetime recognition of each member's special achievements.
