The Art of Living Club at the University of Minnesota is a student organization started by students who have taken the world famous Art of Living Course Part I. The purpose of the club is to share with the University community, especially students, information and simple breathing techniques that can help them eliminate stress in their lives.

The Art of Living Course Part I is one of many programs instituted by the Art of Living Foundation founded by His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in 1981. Today it is perhaps the world’s largest volunteer based non-profit organization and works in consultative status with the UN. The basis of the Foundation’s work is to serve society by strengthening the individual who benefits from eliminating stress, creating belongingness, restoring human values, and encouraging people from all backgrounds, religions, and cultural tradition to come together in celebration and service.

The Art of Living Course I is a practical course of experience and knowledge designed to develop the full potential of life. Enjoyed by people of all backgrounds and traditions, the course is based on the ancient knowledge of the art of living and the healing power of the breath, adapted to the needs of modern life. It offers practical tools to eliminate stress and awaken our innate potential to heal ourselves. The techniques and tools learned bring greater peace, energy, awareness, and joy to daily life. The Art of Living Course offers specific breathing practices and techniques including meditation and group processes that infuse the body with energy and harmonize the natural rhythms of the body, mind, and emotions.

The hall mark of the course is the Sudarshan Kriya® which uses specific rhythms of breath to re-establish balance in life as it floods the cells of the body with energy. Course participants report that with regular practice (15-20 minutes a day), there is a vast improvement in physical and mental energy, as well as greater harmony with others. Scientific studies suggest that these breathing techniques have a positive effect on the body physiology, the nervous, endocrine and immune systems.
