GEOLOGIC TIME:

GSM 21 The Earth Has A History - Helps build an understanding and appreciation of the
difficult idea of geologic time. Walks viewers through layers of time in the colorful Flatirons area
of the Rocky Mountains, explaining the changes to the Earth's surface throughout geologic or
"deep time." A teacher guide. Published by The Geological Society of America. (20min/$25/D.
Zbikowski loan).

GSM89 Geologic Time - This video demonstrates the immensity of geologic time. Natural
records of the earth's history from the Precambrian to the Mesozoic are shown in the exposed
strata of the Grand Canyon. The older layers of rocks contain no record of life, and the
progression to the growing complexity and diversity of life at the canyon's rim is illustrated. The
various means of establishing relative time are explained, and the measurement of absolute time
with radiometric dating processes in the geochronology laboratories is explained [Reviewed by S.
Huppler]. Teacher Guide. Published by Encyclopaedia Britannica. (24min/$79/Gift from Ed and
Sylvia Huppler; in memory of her brother, and GSM member, Kenneth Torstad).

ROCKS AND MINERALS:

GSM22 Rocks That Form on the Earth's Surface - This video explains the natural processes
that gradually decompose all types of rock. Weathering begins the process, then erosional agents:
running water, wind, waves and ice transport the products. Following this deposition, sediment is
lithified by compaction from the pressure of the overlying rock and by minerals deposited in the
spaces between the particles. The sediment is thus transformed into solid sedimentary rock.
[Reviewed by S. Huppler]. Helps viewers to reason and discover what sedimentary rocks are
made of and how they are formed. A teacher guide. Published by Encyclopaedia Britannica.
(17min/$99/GSM).

GSM23 Rocks That Originate Underground - This video examines the characteristics of natural
rocks that were formed underground. It shows photomicrographs of three types of rock and
shows the formation and development of crystals. It explains how the origin of the rocks can be
determined from the extent and pattern of crystallization, - whether the rock issued from openings
in the earth's crust (volcanic), cooled for millions of years deep within the earth (plutonic), or was
partially transformed from its original state by being subjected to high temperatures and pressures
underground (metamorphic). It is an excellent film, and the laboratory experiments clearly show
basic principles [Reviewed by S. Huppler]. Teacher Guide. Published by Encyclopaedia
Britannica. (22.5min/$99/GSM).

GSM24 The Rock Cycle - This program unravels the complex processes that create, change, and
break down earth materials. Clear and concise definitions of the major rock types are illustrated
using full motion video and colorful computer graphics. Examples of erosion, deposition,
metamorphism and volcanism were filmed on location in the Rocky Mountains and at other scenic
locations across North America. A teacher guide. Scott Resources. (18min/$69.95/GSM).

GSM25 Gemstones of America - An exquisite and award winning presentation that explores
how the Earth's rare crystals are formed, mined and then crafted into spectacular jewelry. Exciting
and geologically intriguing. Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Available from Lapidary
Journal. (60min/$29.95/D. Zbikowski loan).

glacier. Journey to the Sahara to see how the latest ice age, as it brought freezing cold to much of
the planet, made the desert bloom. Could today's forests become the barren deserts of tomorrow?
Ambrose Video. (55min/$99.95/Gift from Henry & Marjorie Gangl).

GSM88 Continental Drift: The Theory Of Plate Tectonics - This video illustrates the features
of plate tectonics. It demonstrates that the major continents were, at least once in earth's history,
joined to form a supercontinent, and were later broken apart by plate movement across the
surface of the earth, set in motion by convection currents in the underlying mantle. It illustrates
the three types of plate boundaries: divergent boundaries where plates move apart; convergent
boundaries, - zones where plates move together causing one to go beneath the other or where
plates collide; and transform boundaries where plates slide past each other, scraping and
deforming as they pass. It examines rifting, faulting, earthquakes and volcanism, the formation of
new volcanic islands, mid-ocean ridges, sea floor spreading, and the formation of hot spots, -
areas of concentrated heat flow at the earth's surface - with rising magmatic plumes that provide
the driving force for sea floor spreading and the formation of volcanic island chains such as the
Hawaiian Islands [Reviewed by S. Huppler]. Teacher Guide. Published by Encyclopaedia
Britannica. (21.2min/$99/Gift from Ed and Sylvia Huppler, in memory of her brother, and GSM
member, Kenneth Torstad).

systems. Dozens of subsurface, seismic, and outcrop examples. (26min/$150/Gift from Amoco).

GSM73 Paleogene Biostratigraphy and Sequence Stratigraphy of the North Sea - A look at
the North Sea and how the sequence stratigraphy and the biostratigraphy are used together. In
addition to Amoco work, Peter Vail and his student, Jack Neal, show their work.
(30min/$150/Gift from Amoco).

GSM74 Sequence Stratigraphy of the Gallup Sandstone - A close look at two stops of a
popular Amoco field trip examining this Cretaceous sequence in the San Juan Basin, New
Mexico. The Detailed facies relationships are put into a sequence stratigraphic context. A
correlation methodology is presented that can be used in any basin. (55min/$150/Gift from
Amoco).

GSM75 Carbonate Sequence Stratigraphy, Guadalupe Mountains, New Mexico - Describes
the comprehensive stratigraphic work conducted by the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology on
this classic field area. Shelf, reef, and basinal sediments are described and linked using sequence
stratigraphic principles. (87min/$150/Gift from Amoco).

GSM76 Fluvial Paleovalleys in the Tertiary, Spanish Pyrenees - Describes work conducted on
a huge, well-exposed paleovalley fill (60min/$150/Gift from Amoco).

GSM77 The Alba Field: Aspects of the Depositional Model - One billion barrels of oil-in-place
are stratigraphically trapped in late Eocene reservoir sandstone at Alba in the North Sea. The
sandstone was deposited by gravity flows in a bathyal slope setting. (20min/$150/Gift from
Amoco).
