Phil Adams tells us: Greg and family stopped in this July. Russ had not seen Greg since high school. We had a great time trading stories back and forth. Greg ,Billy Hileman and myself all spent part of our senior year spring break visiting some girls in Garden City. Greg had not been to Garden City since and I never dreamed I'd end up living in Garden City. Russ and I play allot of golf together and two of his kids have worked for me. Also living in Garden City are Bret Parsons, Linda (Frakes) Ackerman and her husband Randy (Lucky High  class of 72.)  also Suzy Olsen's brother Pete lives in Garden City and  is a regular golfing partner for Russ and myself. Mark Keller is a regular visitor to Garden City as part of his sales territory and we always manage to grab Russ and get a good golf game in.

quiltAfter years of procrastination, Cindy Lamkin and Barbara (BJ) Johnson finally completed a Home Ec project this October.  The two met in Austin, Texas at Cindy’s home, otherwise known as “Cindy’s Sweatshop” as BJ was fond of calling it.  The two “most-unlikely-to-make-a-quilt” girls from the class of 1972 actually finished a quilt project that would have even passed Mrs. Franks’ scrutiny. As most of you know, BJ has experienced many things in life, but she was a quilting virgin.  Hesitant at first, she quickly got involved in the project when Cindy explained that an important first step in the creative process was wine selection.  Luckily BJ brought two bottles with her and learned one of the key rules of quilting…a good vintage can make even a “wonky” seam look good.  Despite the wine, the project nearly came to a screeching halt when the pair realized that their original quilt design would involve some math.  (We’re talking fractions mind you!)

During her visit, Barbara also got to see a bit of Austin.  One evening the quilters took a break to see the worlds largest bat conservancy under Congress Bridge in downtown Austin.  Anticipating the emergence of 1.2 million flying rats, Barbara dressed for the event with binoculars, cameras, and a “bat watching outfit”.  (Cindy took one look and ran back into the house for a bag to wear over her head.)

Throughout the weekend of sewing BJ was as impressive as ever, remembering every book she’s ever read including the author’s name, main characters and how much she got for it at the used book store once she finished!  Cindy did well to remember her own name.

Despite all the merry making, the reason for making the quilt was to honor Barbara’s father Julian Johnson who passed away November 2005.  Even the most imaginative person could not have foreseen how a few worn shirts could have become such a masterpiece destined to become a family heirloom.  Even more important, BJ and Cindy couldn’t help but think that Reverend Johnson was looking down and smiling as two long-time friends had a chance to re-connect in his memory.

Cindy and BJ have vowed not to wait until someone dies to get back together.

8/26/06 Perhaps your webmaster (John Nordin) can add a line or two of news. I am just starting a new job, teaching in the Communication Studies department at the University of Minnesota. If that sounds vaguely familiar, it's because our own Ed Schiappa is the department chair. I married last year, to Debra, who remains behind in Washington, for now, alas.
8/24/06 And our reunion coordinators received news from Mary Eidson who you might also remember as Mary Gaetke. She writes: "I am not sure if you (or anyone else for that matter) remember me.  I was only at MHS for my senior year.  I received my postcard about the upcoming 35th reunion.  I checked into the website listed and found it extremely interesting.  I really enjoyed learning where everyone is now.

So....here is my life in a nutshell LOL.  I married Butch (Milton) Carlson in 1977 and immediately became a mother of three kids...Roxanne (1967), Debra (1968) and Ronald (1970).  I was pretty much a stay at home mom for one year.  We moved to Dawson, Minnesota in 1978 and Pegi was born.  A year later, in 1979, our youngest, Cyndi came along.  I spent the next 15 years raising a family.  In 1994 I went back to college and studied Robotics Technology.  I graduated two years later with the distinction of having the fourth highest gpa in our class and also being the only female in the class.  I worked for a couple of years in our area before heading to "The Cities" as we affectionately call the Minneapolis/St Paul area of our state.  I worked for a company that has had many name changes but our product had the ability to digitally capture mugshot and fingerprints.  In the eight years I was with the company as a Robotics Technician first and eventually a Logistics Coordinator, my company went world wide and is the leader in biometric technology.

Last year my husband retired and after a year of him living 150 miles away, I decided I needed to "come home".  So now I am in a totally new profession.  I have started my own business, MBC Creations, (website coming soon LOL) and do machine embroidery.  To help supplement the income and receive insurance, I am a Program Coordinator for Facing New Horizons.  I love the interaction I have with our clients who are Vulnerable Adults living in home settings.

From our five children, we have been blessed with nine grandchildren.....8 grandsons and one granddaughter (spoiled rotten but absolutely adorable).  Our oldest grandson, Will, is currently serving our country in the Navy.  Most of our children stayed close to home in Minnesota.  One ventured out and lives in Florida.  We are lucky to have six of the nine grandkids within 3 hours of us.

For now I can be reached at grandmac7@hotmail.com.  Take care....Mary Beth Carlson

Suzy (Olson) Metzler says: We sold our general store in 2004 and I closed down The Basket Collector's Gazette in 2005, but I'm still a Longaberger Home Consultant and still married to my German, Helmut, and have three daughters who are of course a little older now. Katy is 23, Heidi is 20 and Kelsey is 18. All three will be out of the house beginning in just 3 or 4 more days! Looking forward to the reunion! Photo attached of our whole family in July 2006 in Victoria, British Columbia, having high tea on our vacation. Patrice (Shepard) Rodriquez writes to point out that, contrary to popular belief, she does not live in Dodge City, but in San Antonio Texas. "... spent years in court reporting and finally had my two beautiful daughters. Natalie is 12 and our miracle baby, Ashley, is 8. Both are extremely artistic and talented. Recently, the girls auditioned for and were chosen to be in the Moscow Ballet's Nutcracker, and will be performing with them during Thanksgiving holiday. I feel blessed that I can stay home with them and cherish every minute.

My parents live in Overland Park, Ks., as well as my brother, nephews (one at KU),niece, and multitudes of cousins!!! Karen and Don (class of '71) live in Newton, Ks. and are doing great. Since none of my relative live there, I have not been to Manhattan since 1987, but I can assure you that I still have purple blood and always cheer on the Wildcats (even when they play UT!). Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying life. Keep on Truckin'!!!!!!!!!!!"

10/24/05 Tapani Oksanen wrote to say that "In August this year I moved to DC to work for the World Bank for a couple of years. So this is just to let you know that I'm on the same continent with you guys, and interested to hear if there are any gatherings in Manhattan in the pipeline.

I somehow lost most of my e-mail addresses in the process of changing computers etc, so I'd appreciate if you let others who might have an interest to know...to know. Otherwise I just keep on googling.

Would be nice to reestablish some form of contact. Alternative email is:
