Kelly (21), our youngest daughter, is living in New York and is working in the nursing field.

FAMILY: My partner of 17 years, Sarah Wilke, is CEO of UMR Communications, the publisher of The United Methodist Reporter (and the reason many in the class got personalized reminder cards and that the hard-copy directories have a section of color photos … Thank you, Sarah!). In Manhattan, all roads seem to eventually lead to Meadowlark retirement community, which is where my parents moved last year.
CAREER: I left The Dallas Morning News after 25 years in 1999 to work freelance. After I bounced around on a number of editing and writing projects, three years ago over lunch, my all-time favorite DMN editor and I cooked up an idea for an opinion-page feature – she’s deputy Editorial Page editor – and by the end of the meal, I had volunteered to do it. Consequently, I now regularly follow 60+ syndicated political columnists in order to compile a twice-a-week digest of the most topical material. (You can find it at www.dallasnews.com. Click on “Opinion” and look for “Balance of Opinion.” I apologize in advance if the site makes you register.) I’ve also taken on a number of behind-the-scenes editing chores for the Editorial pages that keep me busy …
I’m still freelance, though, which means I get to work in my pajamas. Gotta love it.
OTHER NEWS: Sarah and I get to travel quite a bit – with the help of my flexible schedule and work that can be done wherever there’s Internet access. Sarah and I are active in our Methodist church, and we have lots of fun with her nine nieces and nephews, ages 10-26. I also am two classes shy of a master of arts degree (including four classes in oil painting) at the University of Texas at Dallas. I’ve pursued the degree mainly to work on retaining my brain cells, but I’ve discovered I’m a lot better student this time around!

NEWS: Joe retired from USAF as a lieutenant colonel and is temporarily working for the government again as a flight planner.
Christian, 20, will be a junior at the University of Illinois in business. He came home for spring break and said, “Mom, I slipped on the ice at school and the LCD screen on my laptop is cracked, my Ipod is frozen and the ‘check engine soon’ light just came on in my car.” He then left to catch a plane to Florida.
Alex, 18, just graduated from high school and plans to attend a Division III college (somewhere!) to play baseball. He won the Mr. Homecoming event at school by dressing up like a girl with a blonde wig and dancing to “Don’t Cha Wish Your Girlfriend Was Hot Like Me!”
Nick, 16, will be a junior in high school and Josiah, 15, will be a sophomore. Nick’s a great kid and honor student but gave us a scare two weeks ago when the ATV he was driving at a friend’s party slid out into the road and hit an oncoming car. Fortunately, Nick walked away without a scratch. I was a basket case for a week.
Mr. Hill, the new and VERY young and inexperienced vice-principal of discipline wanted to suspend Josiah from school for five days a few weeks before school was out. Joe and I had to step in and explain to him that the projectile (folded staple shot from his mechanical pencil) Josiah launched in class was not meant to hit the teacher and it was not an act of terrorism, but that of a class clown. Josiah had already apologized profusely to his honors Latin teacher, whom he hit accidently. We got his sentence greatly reduced, but of course, he was in big trouble with Mom and Dad!
Isaac, 8, will be a third-grader next fall. He adores his older brothers and is following in their footsteps. He had the teacher’s lounge in hysterics last year when he walked up to the new blonde student teacher in his regular-ed class and told her she was hot!
Those are just a few of the highlights of this past year ... Joe told the boys we are playing “Survivor” next week and one of them will be voted out of the house!
The boys really are good kids, though, and I’m really proud of them. Joe and I try to keep laughing to keep our sanity! We’re in a great church and have a lot of prayer support. Sorry I missed the reunion! I’m in Manhattan on occasion, and Joe and I think we may move back some day. Lots of love! – Tina

NEWS: I am still in Mount Pleasant with Jane (“his wife,” as Ed Schiappa was/is so fond of saying) and our two children David, 18, and Elizabeth, 12. As with the last blow-out, Jane still works for Pilgrim’s Pride in R&D. Due to the company’s growth philosophy and acquisitions over the last few years, Pilgrim’s is now the No. 1 poultry company in the United States, with world headquarters situated between Mount Pleasant and the even smaller town of Pittsburg, Texas.
I am still working (for the last eight years) for a law firm in the nearby town of Daingerfield, Texas. I continue to keep my law license in Alabama but work as a “legal assistant” here in Texas. I use that term to distinguish myself from the Danny DeVito character in the movie The Rainmaker. I am NOT a “para-lawyer” (a term coined in that movie to describe DeVito’s character who never passed the bar exam).
Our son, David, is in the final “death throes” of high school. In fact, it is his graduation that keeps us from attending the 35th in Manhattan. While you are “throwing back a few cold ones” at Pat’s on Friday night, I will be watching my “little boy” walk across the stage.
Elizabeth (who was in first grade the last time we got together) is about to ente junior high. She is 12 (“going on 18”) and is now taller than Jane. The last two summers we have sent her to K-State’s basketball camp in hopes of retiring in a few years when she enters the WNBA draft. She is also the really smart one in the family. On her fifth six-week report card for sixth grade, she got her first “B” ever. She was devastated (adverbs will get you every time).

Beth is 14 and loves performing, the musical Wicked, and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Her dream job is to write for People magazine. Paula and I will have been married 20 years in August. She keeps us all headed in the right direction while working part time to support Grace’s horse habit. CAREER: I’m in my 20th year of teaching civil engineering at the University of Alabama. It’s a bit sobering to realize that my career is more than half over and that I’m “senior faculty.” Fortunately, the students are still fun, research is still challenging, and I’ve got tenure!
OTHER NEWS: I enjoy our class reunions. Marcia and Dawn, we really appreciate you. My big hope this year is that someone will know where our old friend Dan Johnson is, or that Bev Hubbard will make an appearance. I also enjoy hearing what David Maxfield will write in this space. She has been married for four years to the wonderful Mark Felix, also a student at U of A. He loves the season changes and we may have lost him to the Midwest, especially since he has met a sweet young woman in St. Louis. And our baby, Mark, 21, is at Arizona State University, still undecided on a major. We were empty nesters and enjoying it (didn't see how I could), but now Mark is home for the summer and we have a house guest, Miss Emily Lykens, daughter of Cathy Brown Lykens. Emily is doing an internship in Phoenix this summer, so we have an active house once again and that is a good thing!! OTHER NEWS: I run a multimedia lab at the University of Arizona called the Virtual Reality Annex. I get to play with expensive toys. Go to vr.arizona.edu for good, clean fun. I decided to “retire” to the work force as I left the touring life in 2000 after globe-trotting with an Irish, Tex-Mex group known as the Mollys for over seven years. We were never signed but still managed to release five CDs, play Lincoln Center twice and land on The Washington Post’s top ten for the year 1997. Now I have my own band called the Carnivaleros. I mostly play accordion and sing but get to play lots more instruments when I record. I find it difficult to play the accordion, drums and sing at the same time, although I’ve seen street musicians in Philly play six instruments at once. I have two CDs out on my own label. For more good, clean fun, go here: carnivaleros.com. It’s hot in the desert. Ice cream helps. Did some of us actually wear knee socks? They’re making a comeback y’know. I do miss the prairie. I have a research piece coming out this summer in MIT’s Sloan Management Review. It’s based on some research you can see at www.silencefails.com. I travel a part of each week giving keynote speeches, consulting with a few firms, and leading my research projects. Next week [in April] I lead a one-day workshop for about 75 faculty members at the Harvard Medical School.
I’ve just finished a book – actually, I’m one of five authors – which will be coming out this October. Its title is Influencer: The Power to Change Anything. I’m pretty excited. McGraw-Hill, our publisher, says it will be their big business book for this fall.
OTHER NEWS: On the homefront we try to stay active. Kathy and I will be running a half-marathon in early June in the Black Hills. Two of my nephews and I will be taking our off-road unicycles to the Sundance Ski Resort in July for a weekend of crazy riding. We had a great January kayak trip through the Everglades earlier this year. We’re planning a mini-surfing school for the “Camp David” retreat I host each summer for my nieces and nephews. It amazes my kids when I tell them how excited we used to get when we had a “jeans” day once a semester. And of course, who could forget our blue and white Pep Club sweaters with our blue skirts that we all wore on Fridays?
I look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion. I think everyone will be truly amazed at the growth of Manhattan in the past two years. Our city has certainly changed in size and appearance in many ways and yet, City Park is still the home to Johnny Kaw.

FAMILY: My husband, Mark, and I will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary this summer. We have three daughters, Jennifer, 29, living in Surprise, Ariz., Melissa, 27, living in Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Hannah, 17, who will be a senior next year.
CAREER: I’m currently employed as an orthodontic treatment coordinator. For anyone who doesn’t know what that is, I’m the the person who breaks the bad news of exactly how much that “new smile” is going to cost. My most exciting career news is that in January, I purchased a long-arm quilting machine and started my own quilting business, the Quilted Kangaroo Company.
OTHER NEWS: I decided to start taking ballet classes again. Everything was progressing quite well and I was excited about my “dancing comeback” until the evening that my leap ended in a heap. I found myself in surgery a couple of days later having my broken foot pinned back together. At least I didn’t try to make a “gymnastics comeback.”
