NEWS: I’m a professional matchmaker for upscale professionals with my own offices in Scottsdale and Las Vegas. I work as part of the Kelleher & Associates group founded by Jill Kelleher. We have served for over 20 years as the premier matchmaking service in the U.S. with clients representing all fields of endeavor, including entertainers, doctors, attorneys, celebrities, key executives and entrepreneurs. We also have key offices in San Francisco, Beverly Hills,  and Chicago, as well as a National Accounts office.

You may have seen us on television or in the news or as commentary on The Bachelor or Dr. Phil.  We were on the Donny Deutsch show on CNBC last week [in May]. I’m very successful and have a very high success rate for relationships and marriage. Although all the other offices nationally are owned by Jill Kelleher and her daughter, I worked with Jill for nine years before I moved to Scottsdale five years ago to open my own offices here and in Las Vegas – we all still work together as a team, and I’m part of the management team.

My personal stats:  SINGLE!  Hmmmm …….  go figure!  I have a girlfriend who went to her 35th high school reunion last year in Wisconsin, reconnected with someone, and is now happily married to him.  Isn’t that everyone’s fantasy?  Well, since I’m not going to make it back to the 35th reunion, maybe it’ll happen at the 40th!!

No human children – only two canine types.

Had breast cancer and was the first person in the country with 100% resolvement!!  (I’m a poster child :) Did the chemo, surgeries, radiation – the whole thing – but never empowered it – and kept a great sense of humor through it!!

Would love to hear from anyone and catch up – I’m so sorry I have to miss this one!! Have a great time and here’s to all of you!! I wish you all love and happiness!

NEWS: We moved from Chicago to Claremont, Calif., in August 2003 when my husband, David, became president of Pomona College. It was a year of many transitions: Our oldest daughter graduated from Vassar College, our son started at Harvard, and our youngest daughter spent her senior year with us and graduated from the Vivian Webb School. This year (2007) Mary Christina, 25, returns to Chicago after traveling and working in China and New Zealand; John, 22, our most recent graduate, is working for the Barack Obama presidential campaign in New Hampshire, and Laura, 20, will return to Carleton College in the fall after a summer internship in Washington, D.C.  I work on behalf of Pomona College, and in addition, I volunteer for several community organizations that serve children (library and after-school tutoring program).  David and I will have been married 30 years this December.

FAMILY:  Pat and I celebrated our 25th anniversary with a trip to Alaska in 2005 (if you live this far north, it is a crime not to go there!)  We are almost empty nesters now, except that our youngest is living at home while doing the college thing.  Our oldest daughter has married, and we are grandparents! Along with all you other new grandparents, we say, where did it all go?! Our son is trying to make it in music, and is quite good on guitar.

CAREER:  Still doing the same kind of thing that I was doing the last time I saw most of you:  professional accompanying, private lessons, some composing, some arranging. I spent quite a bit of time in the studio last year working on a musical that I did most of the arranging for. I am also in the process of writing a (very short!) handbook on the art of accompanying a children’s choir. A side benefit of the accompanying stuff … I get to go to Italy this summer with my choir! Yay!

OTHER NEWS:  Pat and I have started a new business based on his longtime hobby, geology. So my house is now overrun with rocks. Lots of rocks. If you would like to get the overview, go to our website, NorthwestRockAndFossil.com. He specializes in geology curricula and polished thundereggs. If you don’t know what a thunderegg is, then you owe it to yourself to visit the site!

The last update, we had just moved to Seattle to start a new church (Christian) here. We love the people we have met by doing this, and our lives are richer for it.

On the political front (never too far from my view!), our daughter is involved in a lawsuit with our school district. For you lawyers out there (Ellen!), we file all our documents this week [late April] for summary judgment with the federal court in Seattle.  This will be a case that is likely to end up on the steps of the Supreme Court, but, of course, they don’t have to hear it. We’ll see. Rather than go into all the details here, you can go to www.TheSeattleTimes.com, and type in “Kathryn Nurre” and “Ave Maria.”  If you want more details than are there, feel free to email us.  It is a pretty fair story, but, of course, they could not cover every aspect of it.

I live just up the street from my brother Daniel and his family, and two hours from my sister Julia and her son in Cincinnati. I like being part of their families, and especially being unt to Daniel’s daughters, Maggie and Kelsey, 9 and 11 years.  My cairn terriers are thrilled to have little ones around the house again, which completely compensates for uprooting them (and me) from our home in the Northwest.

My elder son Luke, 25, has been a product designer for Ximedica in Providence, R.I., since graduating Carnegie Mellon University in 2004.  He’s getting married in October to longtime love Liz Bartley, a patho-biologist and Ph.D. candidate at Brown University (and, selfishly, the perfect “daughter I never had”).

His brother Samuel, 23, graduated last year from Occidental College in business economics and is a financial analyst with CountryWide Corporate offices in L.A. Only Luke and I call him Samuel; to the rest of the world he’s Sam.

The boys are very good to me and we see each other whenever possible, but it’s not often enough and I do miss them like crazy.

As you know Don Harris, fellow classmate, and I are married.  It’s so great being married to my childhood sweetheart.  I get such a chuckle thinking I chased that boy all through school. We’ll be celebrating our 32nd anniversary come this September. That’s an amazing accomplishment these days.

He and I (mostly him, though) built our own home.  Yeah, we lived there quite awhile before we had an address. Pursuing the township to come up with a name for the road for the “911” emergency system was high priority with having children, so they named it Harris Road. Isn’t that something?!? We have three wonderful children who don’t know what they think of their ol’ hippie parents.  And what I think is so cool is that they graduated from Manhattan High, too. It was so weird when we would have to speak to the principal, who just happened to be the very one we had, Rezac! Then followed by Mr. Benson. Gees Louise! The flashbacks would come flooding back and I’d get a little intimidated sitting in front of the old principal, then I’d remember I wasn’t the kid who was in trouble! Teehee. When my kids were little, I got such a thrill when I found out that the mom of one of our fellow classmates, Mrs. Fallon, was going to teach them when they started school.

Don still works for the same company that back then was called KPL but now is known as Kansas Gas Service and will be retiring in the near future (he’s been there over 30 years), and I still work at home. We are now blessed with having two beautiful grandkids, and I wonder at times if they will be going to Manhattan High, too? Wow, that would be three generations of Harris’.  Wonder if the ol’ high school could take it? Haha!  We still keep on truckin’, as we love to travel, go Harley bike-riding, and white-water rafting. It’s amazing how you still keep learning!

We won’t be able to make the reunion this time because we will be visiting our oldest son who lives in Raleigh, N.C.  It’s kinda funny but we didn’t actually make the last one either because of the same son ... He was having his wedding reception downstairs from the class reunion!

Well, this has been wonderful going down memory lane with you! We’ll miss seeing everyone and hopefully we’ll make the next one.

NEWS: I am writing this from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where I’ve come in a last, desperate attempt to lose weight before the reunion. Kidding, of course … I am really here to attend a dryland watershed management conference and then see the incredible prehistoric sites in the northern part of the country.

Since our last reunion, I’ve scaled back my landscape architecture practice to accommodate my return to graduate school where I began working on a Ph.D. program at the University of Arizona in 2003. Thanks to a team of supporters (Cindy, Karen, Debbie, Nancy, Coco, Chuck – thank you!), I have completed my coursework, as well as my written and oral exams, and am now in the middle of my field research. I am studying dryland sustainable development and am working with a national park in Costa Rica (yes, there is a dry area!) and the surrounding communities. If any of my numerous grant proposals are successful, I hope to extend the research to include the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in the southern Flint Hills of Kansas.

Everyone is doing great in my family. My oldest grandson graduated from high school last May (!) and is now attending college in Washington. The other five grandkids are still living in Washington and Arizona and are now 8 to 13 years old. My mom is turning 90 this August! She still lives in the same place and is currently bird-sitting my African Grey parrot while I am traveling around so much. I have also made her home my temporary base of operation while my house in Tucson is being repaired/remodeled. My mom is then planning to move to Tucson with me when that project is completed next year.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you in Manhattan!

Ian, 21, graduates from UConn this year and will pursue banking for at least one year while deciding if he’ll go to law school;  Connor, 19, a sophomore at the University of Scranton, studying international relations.  He just returned from a semester abroad studying in Ecuador and will return next fall or go to Spain to continue his Spanish language study.

CAREER: After working very part-time while raising the boys (X-ray tech and pre-school music teacher), I went back to school after our youngest son entered college and became a MRI technologist.  I work for a private radiology group with four offices in the area.  I’m fortunate to be working on a state-of-the-art MRI machine. I work too many hours, so now I can justify not cooking or cleaning!

OTHER NEWS: We celebrated our 25th anniversary by taking a family trip to the Galapagos Islands.  I had dreamed of going ever since being inspired by Mr. Conway in high school biology. The timing was perfect since our son Connor was in Ecuador studying.  I was in touch with Mr. Conway before the trip. (Yea, Google!)  He said to send to his best to the class of ‘72.

FAMILY: Still married to my first wife, Rebecca (Becki). A Detroit area native, she is a part-time seamstress and dressmaker. As she would say when asked to describe our family: “we have two cats, no kids.”

CAREER: I have almost 29 years with DaimlerChrysler, which may be once again just “Chrysler” by the time you read this. I am currently working on the design of a next-generation engine. It’s been an interesting 29 years in a business that goes beyond cyclical to manic-depressive, but there never is a dull moment!

OTHER NEWS: I had hip-implant surgery in 2003 and can now walk much better than I could in the 2002 reunion. We are just finishing (hopefully) what has been a very long construction project – essentially rebuilding and doubling the size of our home. After consuming much of our cash and patience over four years, it is finally looking close to being completed. Becki has lived with the project so long, she is considering getting a builder’s license!

NEWS: All is well in my life at my version of  “Vista” (the city, not the place). My partner, Bill Adams, and I continue with life’s adventures and opportunities.

We have a new member of our household, Bill’s mother, Merele, who moved in with us in March 2006 after spending a few years with Bill’s three sisters in Madison, Wisc.

The biggest highlight is that we are still here. During our 30th class reunion weekend in 2002, I was in the local hospital watching hair fall out by the handfuls. The docs had given me the first of six months’ worth of chemotherapy to battle Hodgkin’s lymphoma and apparently things were dicey then, Bill tells me now, but I’m still here.

Somewhere after chemo finished, fuzzy stuff started to grow on my head and I’ve let it keep on growin’, so to speak. My new hair is now longer than my old pre-chemo hair ever was.

March 2003 saw me return to work full time with the North County Times as managing editor, a title I’ve held since 1992. This May marks my 20th anniversary with the NCT and 20th year as a Californian. But I still miss the Flint Hills (P.S.: For a look at “home,” out-of-staters should check out the National Geographic’s spread on the Hills in the April 2007 edition).

In August 2005, work had settled down enough for me to write an occasional local-issues column, which I called Keep On Truckin’ (www.nctimes.com/opinion/harris/) – I mean really, what else could I call it? It is on “temporary hold,” but plans are to resume.

March 2006 saw me facing another health threat with colon cancer. Luckily, surgery was all it took to banish that beast, and I’m still here. I resumed working full time in June 2006 and have been working non-stop ever since.

At home, we managing to stay busy with all sorts of things at the house, as well as with the United Methodist Church of Vista and a local AIDS hospice.

NEWS: I live in Dubuque, Iowa, with LeeAnn, my wife of 30 great years.  For those who know nothing about my post-MHS days, I have 3 children (28, 26, 17) and am now a grandfather (13 months), and I have been the pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church for six years. School is still a priority with me as I have been adjunct professor of religion for four years now at the University of Dubuque. I have run into only two ‘72 classmates in 30 years, Alan Tilley and Cathy Hollomon. It would be great to see the old JVband members, mediocre academics (like myself) and varied historical personalities, but I already had a trip in June planned for Topeka. My folks have lived in the big capital city since 1980. Grace and peace to all the reunion gang.

NEWS: My husband Larry still works for the Postal Service and works on computers.  I am in charge of our school library.  I love being with the students and doing library classes.  Larry and I have been married 26 years. Heather is 32 and is a teacher.  She has a little girl Gracie, who is 2, and a set of twins, Tristen and Alleigh, who are 1 (a boy and girl). She is taking a leave of absence right now and working part time as the Hope City clerk. I love being a grandmother!! Her husband is gone with his work a lot, so Larry and I help out every chance we get.  Kyle is 22 and is working for the City of Manhattan now and going back to K-State to finish the degree he started at Doane.  He had three bad concussions and had to quit football at Doane. Whitney is 20 and is a massage therapist.  She works five months at Breckenridge County, Colo., at a spa and then is home doing massages and working part time at Trendy with a Twist in Aggieville. My mom is doing great!  My sister Lana is still in California with her husband and two daughters and my sister Devan’s husband, Ryan, is a director at the Duluth, Minn., zoo but has accepted a job in San Antonio as the zoo’s assistant director. It has been really hard not seeing her boys all the time. If anyone would like to chat, you can call my home or email me.

FAMILY: Husband, Hannes Zacharias, is deputy manager of Johnson County.  Daughter, Lydia, 18, graduates from Shawnee Mission Northwest this spring and will attend Butler University in Indianapolis in the fall.  Son, Kurt, 15, is a sophomore at SMNW, and daughter, Isabel, 13, is a seventh-grader.  Our kids are involved in band, choir, Scouts, theater, tennis, and heavy-duty socializing.

CAREER: I’ve taught 4-year-olds at a friend’s preschool the past two years.  I was a music sub in the Shawnee Mission District before that.  I’m an assistant director for the Allegro Community Children’s Choirs, and I sing with the Kansas City Festival Singers and my church choir.

OTHER NEWS: We’ve enjoyed family trips to Germany and England since our last reunion. I treated myself and sang in Ireland and England with Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral Choir last summer.  Hannes and I are now officially the older generation, having lost both his parents and my mother and grandmother in the past three years. Lots of transitions!  Although there are things we miss about smaller towns, we’re enjoying life in the KC Metro area, and our kids have thrived here.

Bob and I will be married 34 years this June – my how time does fly by! We have three boys, Brian, 26, Clay, 23, and Mikey, 20. Brian and Clay are both through college (at last!). Brian is a project manager (living at home temporarily) for Marker Systems here in Buffalo. Brian’s adventures post-college took him first to Panama, where he managed a marina at an all inclusive resort … then to St. Louis for a year, and he is now back in Buffalo (where he said he would NEVER live). Clay has just completed a management development program for Manufacturers and Traders Bank and was recently promoted within the bank – he lives in Buffalo. We’re all counting on his ambition and drive to launch him into a very successful career.  Mikey is a sophomore at Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania … majoring in sports marketing. He was a high school All American in lacrosse.

Bob will be retiring from a 28-year career with General Mills this fall and is looking forward to launching a “new” career, which means doing something adventurous for the next decade! I am a project manager for a construction consulting firm. Continue to coach downhill ski racing in the winters  … This year my racing program had 130 children participating! Great fun!

After a 7+ year break, the boys and I are planning on hiking another section of the Long Trail (extension of the Appalachian Trail going through Vermont) this June. I have put them on notice that I am old enough to qualify for not having to carry a frame backpack! They have warned me to pack lightly.

[JUNE 2007 UPDATE: Jane was unable to attend the reunion because her son Mikey was playing in the NCAA Division II championships over Memorial Day weekend in Baltimore. Afterward she wrote: “The weekend was a great experience for Mikey … His team lost with one second left in the game – someone has to lose! The team played well … quite an experience for a sophomore to start in a championship game before a crowd of 23,000.”]
