History of Kappa Chapter

Sigma Alpha Mu began in 1909, when eight sophomores at New York City College joined together to form an organization that would develop into one of the most succesful historically Jewish fraternities. Nearing our 100 year anniversary, the Sammy tradition is still going strong. For a complete national history, please visit http://www.sam.org.

Located on 10 Ave. and 5th St, the Sammy house is in the heart of Dinkytown on campus. Sammy's at the U goes back over 50 years and we have strong ties with the Minneapolis as well as the entire midwest jewish community. We currently have 30 active members which places us right in the mid-range size of all fraternities on campus, however, we are far from the typical "fraternity". We are a historically Jewish fraternity, and maintain that tradition through our ties with the Hillel House and often co-sponsor events with them. We also host a few Shabbats per year and have the University's Jewish students over for a dinner.

We also have many social events throughout the year, whether they are brotherhood events, where just members of the house are invited, philanthropy events, where we raise money for different charities, greek events (like homecoming, spring jam, and inter-mural sports), as well as parties.

When considering joining a fraternity, school work and grades is often a concern of students as well as parents. We at Sammy's consider school the number 1 priority, and we have a study room at the house as well as old tests and school work on file to help all of our members study. We also have regular study hours during the week, which is especially helpful to first year students since so many of you have to take the same core classes. Working with other members of the fraternity can be extremely helpful in classes, and we ranked among the top 5 fraternities in G.P.A. last year.

Sammy's can play as large or as small of a role in your college life as you see fit, and we would love to welcome you over just to meet you and offer you some good food and fun (no strings attached). We will be having several BBQ's and other social events when the year begins, including Twin's Games, movies, bowling, and other events.

Sincerely,
Max Paletz
