Picks: Disappointing Films

The Astronaut Farmer. Dir. Michael Polish. Without a doubt, this was a horrible film, not worth watching. I implore you: don’t bother with it. See something else. Billy Bob Thornton gives a lethargic and nearly benumbed performance as the farmer, and former astronaut, who builds a rocket inside of his barn and eventually orbits the earth. That’s right. We’re talking about outer space here. I think the problem here is simple: I never believed that he built that rocket. I never believed that his high-school-student son could become his launch director. I never believed his wife as a character; what was this solid actor, Virginia Madsen, given to do but be shy and demur and loving and stay in the background and be the forever-supportive wife? The pace of this film was glacial. There were no high points—everything was evenness and mediocrity.
