OLD AGE: STUDENT COLLAGES

Students in courses I have taught on the humanities and aging participated in a number of creativity assignments. One encouraged them to prepare collages, either using images or words, in order to express their attitudes toward aging. Collected here are representative samples of their work. All of the collages have been scanned from the originals. The only changes made in the collages have been the addition of a color background and combinations of colors where appropriate. The first collage, shown above, spells out words that begin with the letters E-L-D-E-R-L-Y.


The collage below consists of three flowers growing out of the soil of ageism. The flower on the left shows a woman in late middle age. Here face is surrounded by the following words:

The second flower shows and old woman in the center, her white hair clearly visible. Her face is surrounded by the following words:

The third flower has no face at it scenter. Instead, the center is a black spot or a black dot. Around that dot are the following words
