Young at Heart: PREVIEWING NOTES

  1. The first scene of the film is from the concert footage that ends the film. Why begin that way? (This is called a frame technique: where your beginning is mirrored by the ending scene.)
  2. Introduction of some of the cast “characters”—getting to know the chorus by getting to know individuals. INTERVIEW, DIRECT CINEMA
  3. The first “performance” piece is scene 5, a music video by the group. Now we see the “finished product.” DIRECT CINEMA—this gives us a JOLT OF ENERGY
  4. Scenes 8-10 shift gears—introducing us to Fred Knittle and Bob Salvini. Why these scenes at this time in the documentary? How do those scenes alter the mood previously established in the film? INTERVIEW
  5. Rough rehearsals follow in scenes 12 and 15. DIRECT CINEMA
  6. Scene 17 begins with voice-over of original song, Fix You, with the words “When you try your best, but you don’t succeed!” This is a perfect metaphor for what Bob Salvini is going through—trying to work with Fred Knittle on a duet of this number. DIRECT CINEMA
  7. Then the health crisis for Bob Salvini—and then the news of the DEATH OF THE FIRST CAST MEMBER—INTERNAL CLIMAX
  8. A Memorial Concert in a way—the prison concert. DIRECT CINEMA—POSITIVE ENERGY
  9. The show goes on—preparation for the concert (and second health crisis of Joe Benoit)
  10. Another loss—Joe Benoit’s death—and then another rehearsal, and another perfect metaphor (memorial) for Joe Benoit
  11. The Concert DIRECT CINEMA—OVERALL CLIMAX
