LLAMA REPRODUCTION

Llamas are induced ovulators. Llamas breed lying down and give birth standing up. Pregnancy always is carried in the left uterine horn. Llamas are non-seasonal in North America. Estrus length is variable (may be up to 30 days) with short (2 day) intervening periods of disinterest. Pregnancy diagnosis by (1) rectal palpation - 30-60 days post-breeding, (2) transabdominal ultrasound - from 60 days of pregnancy, or (3) measurement of progesterone in serum - greater than 2 ng/ml as early as 21 days post-breeding is suggestive of pregnancy. Llamas have a relatively high incidence of fetal loss. Gestation length is 349 days.
