2) You are referred a 9 year old intact male Standard Poodle with a complaint of poor semen quality. Work-up at the referring DVM's clinic included ultrasound-guided aspiration of the prostate for cytology and culture; the pathology report listed benign prostatic hypertrophy with overlying inflammation as the diagnosis and culture revealed 3+ growth of beta-hemolytic Streptococcus sp. The referring DVM dispensed amoxicillin, to which the organism was reported to be sensitive, but semen quality has not improved in the 2 weeks since treatment was instituted. Can you explain this apparent treatment failure? What is your plan for this dog? Include plans for long-term follow-up.
