One way to retrieve a swarm.

Return to Gary's Home Page

1. A Huge swarm of bees landed in a tree. This is the story of Hannah Raatz and her first hiving of a swarm. She first called Gary for advice and then proceded. Her mother, Pauline took the pictures. July 19, 2004.

2. Fortunately the swarm is located at a convenient height from the ground.

3. Place a hive body with frames directly under the swarm.

4. Remove a few frames so the bees have room to fall into. Just like hiving a package. This is going well don't you think?

5. Now shake the branch so the bees fall into the box.

6. GET OUT OF THE WAY! It still seems to be going well. Hannah as quick reflexes.

7. Now wait and all the bees will go into the box.

8. And wait.

9. And wait. It looks even worse from this side.

10. Still waiting. Don't they know I have studying to do?

11.Some are returning to the branch. I think I will shake them off.

12. That should do it. I think things are still going well don't you?

13. I'm waiting!

14. Maybe if I do a dance they will hurry.

15. There is room for the frames so lets put them in.

16. All of the frames should make them happy.

17. The last frame is put in.

18. The cover is being put on. By morning they can be moved to a permanent location.
