web design basics: tools, tips, & tricks

Project

Okay, it’s your turn!

You will create your very own website, consisting of a minimum of four pages and incorporating the elements discussed here. I will give you a list of suggested topics, but you are free to choose one of your own. Your website will be hosted on the school server and should be appropriate for your high school audience; your peers, parents, teachers, and administrators will view your pages.

While this is NOT a group project and each of you is required to submit a unique site, I encourage you to help each other. You will have time in class to work on your projects; this would be a good time to pick your classmates’ brains! (Just be gentle when you do it, and remember to say thanks!)

The basic requirements for this project are as follows:

  • A rough draft, outline, or sketch of your site (to be turned in at least one week before the website is due)

  • At least four web pages, linked together as a coherent whole

  • A one-page typewritten reflection on the process of creating your site:

    • what went well? what aspects of this project did you find easy?

    • with what did you have difficulty?

    • what steps did you take to figure out a difficult concept? did you seek out help from a peer?

    • did you give any help to someone else? what kind of assistance did you give?

    • would you like to continue learning about web design? why or why not?

    • what do you consider to be the most important aspects of web design?

A detailed description of the requirements is provided for you here. Print it out and refer to it often as you complete your project.

Here is a list of possible topics for your website:

  • your favorite NASCAR drivers

  • your favorite sports figures and their stats, biographies, etc.

  • your family and friends and why they are important to you

  • samples of your writing or artwork

  • your favorite recording artist

  • your favorite author or books or comic book

  • your favorite cartoon character(s)

  • your favorite TV shows

  • your favorite movies

  • your life story in words and pictures

  • your hometown or neighborhood

  • your favorite cars

  • a tribute to your kindergarten teacher

  • your favorite animal

  • your views on life or a particular “hot topic”

  • something else that “floats your boat”

Your site should not be simply a list of your favorites (or least favorites) but also include background or illuminating information. Tell us something new or exciting or insightful about your topic!

HAVE FUN!

If you’re bewildered or befuddled on any step along the way, ask questions! Talk to me, talk to your peers! We can learn a lot from each other!
