web design basics: tools, tips, & tricks

Content

In real estate, the key is “location, location, location.” In web design, the key is “content, content, content.” Your site might be the best-looking one out there, but if the content is not there, if your site doesn’t SAY something, doesn’t offer some useful information, you might as well not have a site at all. The reverse also is true: if you have a lot of great content but your site looks sloppy, your user will question your credibility and professionalism.

Think about what you want your users to learn or think or do based on your site content. What is the purpose of your site? To entertain, to inform, to persuade? Does everything in your site align with that purpose? As you make a rough sketch of your layout (as noted in “the starting point”), think about the content. Is there something missing from what you want to say, something superfluous?

And, for Pete’s sake, make sure to update your site on a regular basis. There’s nothing more frustrating than going to a site that is stale and outdated.

tip

If a page or subsection of your site is not finished, don’t link to it. Pages “Under Construction” are useless — and just plain annoying!
