Module 4: Critical Approaches to Responding to Media Texts

Module 4

Final Task

In this final task, to be conducted in chat rooms on tappedin.org, each of you will be adopting one critical approach and applying that approach to analysis of one media text.

  • Based on the following alphabetical assignments based on your last name for each of the 7 critical approaches:

    A – D: rhetorical/audience
    E – G: semiotic
    H – J: poststructuralist
    K – M: critical discourse analysis
    N – P: feminist
    Q – T: postmodern
    V – Z: postcolonial

Write out your analysis for submitting to the instructor in which you:

  • summarize the key principles associated with the application of your approach

  • apply these principles to analyze specific aspects of a media text.

  • Meet in a group in one of the chat rooms (to be assigned) which all of the members of your group are employing the same critical approach in analyzing a media text (to be selected). In your type-alike group, discuss how your approach could be applied to the media text.

  • Now, form four separate groups of 7 in each of 4 different chat rooms (to be assigned) and share your critical approach with that group. Then, reflect on the differences and similarities between the different approaches in terms of their assumptions about the meaning of media texts. Not also the ways in which these approaches may compliment each other. Discuss the strengths and limitations of each of the different approaches, particularly given their applicability to the media text you were analyzing.

Your written analysis will be evaluated according to the following criteria related to your ability to:

  • formulate the key principles associated with the application of your approach in your own words.

  • apply these principles to analyze a range of different specific aspects of a media text.
