Back to A Field Guide to Cows

Alaskan Cows

Scrub cattle grazing away on Kodiak Island in Alaska. The island has a long history of cattle raising, which, unfortunately, has not always been so successful since the cows have to defend themselves against bears. Photograph taken not too far from the town of Kodiak.

Mbororo Cattle

Some big horned Mbororo cattle, which I photograhed in the Central African Republic near the town of Mobaye. The herder said he raps unruly cows with his walking stick to keep them in line. Though when I saw them the cows were as calm and gentle as could be. These are similar to the Watusi, which is in my guide.

Latvian Blue Cow

With only 28 blue cows in existence, this is one of the rarest cows in the world. According to local story, a mermaid first brought these cows with her from the ocean when she fell in love and married a farmer. Photograph taken near Liepaja.

Latvian Brown Cow and Bull

The Latvian Brown gives incredibly delicious rich milk and no wonder look at all that lush pasture. And my grandparents, Reinholds Gustavs and Anna Pukite, with their Latvian Brown Bull, which also served as the stud bull for the neighboring farms. Both photos taken near Daksti.

Hawaiian Cows

A photo of a most contented cow, a red and white holstein, chewing her cud in paradise. Photograph on Oahu Island at Kualoa Ranch - the same place where they filmed 'Jurassic Park'.
