September 2008

September 09, 2008: CLA Health and Natural Science (HNS) student advising office will be holding a pre-health profession open house on the 9th from 2 to 4:00 p.m. One of the objectives for this open house is to enable students to make connections within the university. Students can stop by the office for prizes, free food, etc.

September 11, 2008: The Pre-Pharmacy Club will have its first meeting of the fall semester on Thursday the 11th in Coffman Memorial Union in room 323 at 4:00 p.m. This meeting will consist of getting to know about the club and new members. We will be playing icebreakers.

September 25, 2008: Peter Haeg (our faculty advisor) will be speaking to the club about the University of Minnesota's admissions. We highly recommend everyone attend this extremely helpful and informational meeting!

 
October 2008

October 09, 2008: Want to know what it's like to be a pharmacy student? We will be having a student panel of current students in the College of Pharmacy. Come to this meeting and have all of your questions answered from a student's perspective.

October 23, 2008: Do you know what a nuclear pharmacist does? If your answer is no, then come to this meeting as the Pre-Pharmacy Club will be having one as the guest speaker of the day. Come with questions and be ready to learn about one of the specialty area of pharmacy practice.

 
November 2008

November 06, 2008: Ever been in an inpatient pharmacy before? Hospitals often have both an inpatient and an outpatient pharmacy. Inpatient specializes in providing the necessary medications for patients who are residing in the hospital, whereas outpatient pharmacies specialize in providing prescriptions for patients to take home when they are done with their stay at the hospital. We will be touring the University of Minnesota Fairview Hospital's Inpatient Pharmacy. Come and see what it's like to work in an inpatient pharmacy and determine for youself how alike and different it is compared to a retail pharmacy.

November 20, 2008: Pharmaceutical Care. Do you know what these two words mean? Come to this meeting and have all your questions answered about this type of pharmacy practice. We are very fortunate to have Dr. Linda Strand, a pioneer and best known for having developed the concept and practice of pharmaceutical care. (Note: If you have already taken Phar 1001, you will notice that Dr. Strand gave a number of lectures about pharmaceutical care. So come and meet her in person).


December 2008
December 04, 2008: Did you know that Pharmacists can work in Long Term Care settings? We will be having a Pharmacist who works at Merwin Long Term Care to come and give a talk about this type of practice. Come to this meeting with questions!

January 2009
January 29, 2009: The Pre-Pharmacy Club has invited a faculty from the U of M College of Pharmacy to come and talk about her work at the U of M. Come to this meeting and learn about the different possibilities that a Pharm.D. graduate can work in after graduation.

February 2009

February 12, 2009: Ever thought about conducting your own research? How about doing research in the College of Pharmacy? Not a lot of people are aware that individuals who conduct research in the field of pharmacy are often times Pharmacists themselves. The Pre-Pharmacy Club is very fortunate to have Dr. Robert J. Straka, Pharm.D., FCCP Professor to come speak about his research and interests. Come and learn about the many different fields of research in the Pharmacy industry.

February 26, 2009: When you think of torture, how would you define it? There are many ways a human being may be tortured. Come to this weeks meeting to learn about the process of recovery from being a tortured victim. A guest speaker from the Center of Victims of Torture will be speaking to the club regarding their organization.


March 2009

March 12, 2009: Kaplan will be giving a mini practice PCAT exam at the beginning of today's meeting. Come and see where you are and what tactics you may learn from Kaplan. They will be answering any questions you may have regarding the PCAT.

March 26, 2009: Do you know how many different fields of pharmacy are available out there today? Can you name six? Well, today's guest speaker will be Shin, a poison control pharmacist. Shin works at the Hennipen County Medical Center (HCMC) as a poison control pharmacist as well as an outpatient pharmacist at HCMC's Outpatient Pharmacy. Come and listen to her speak about the concept of toxicology.


April 2009

April 09, 2009: The meeting on February 26, 2009 was cancelled due to the winter storm, hence the guest speaker from the Center for Victims of Torture has been rescheduled for today's meeting. Come and learn all about their organization and what you can do to help.

April 23, 2009: It's that time of the year. Time for new faces to lead the Pre-Pharmacy Club and to make it even better than the previous year! Do you have ideas that you believe will make our club more effective to students and to encourage prospective members to join and learn about the pharmacy profession? Well, if your answer is "YES!" come and run for an executive position and join the board to help make decisions about this club. The positions available are: President, Vice President, Secretary/Webmaster, Treasurer, Advertising/Social Chair, Volunteer Coordinator, and Fundraising Coordinator. If you have any questions regarding any of these positions, please feel free to contact any of the current position holder and ask them questions. They would love to help you! Good luck!

May 2009

May 07, 2009: The Pre-Pharmacy Club will be holding their end of the year picnic at Van Cleve Park. Come join us for food and fun activities and say farewell to your current executive board members and meet the newly elected 2009-2010 executive board! We hope to see you all there! We will be meeting at in Coffman and walking there together. If you know the way, then feel free to meet us there. Stay tune for an updated email from the listserv regarding this last meeting.

September 2009

September 10, 2009: The Pre-Pharmacy Club will be holding their first meeting of the new school year. Come join us for food and fun activities and meet the new 2009-2010 executive board! The Pre-Pharmacy Club advisors Peter Haeg and Sara Loftstrom will be speaking about the application process for pharmacy school. Kaplan representative Lindsey Katka will be talking about Kaplan PCAT prep courses availiable and Brittney Alms the student liaison for MPSA will be speaking about joining the Minnesota Pharmacy Student Alliance.

September 24, 2009: Interested in volunteering in a pharmacy setting that is also in a different country? During this meeting the students who went on the Nicaragua Trip this past July will be sharing their experiences along with photos from the trip. Peter Haeg and Sara Lofstrom will be also speaking to the club.


October 2009

October 8, 2009:There will be a student panel of current pharmacy students representing different years in the Pharmacy program at the University of Minnesota. We will have a chance to hear about their experiences and be able to ask our undying questions about life as a pharmacy student. This is a great time to hear about a typical day in pharmacy school and get current students opinions/advice.

October 22, 2009:Pharmacist Christina Cipolle from the Community University Health Care Center will be our guest speaker. She is a Medication Therapy Management pharmcist and will tell us about what she does on a daily basis.

November 2009:

November 5th, 2009: The University of Minnesota's Dr. Linda Strand will be speaking to the club about Patient Care and Medication Management. She helped develop this type of pharmacy practice which is becoming a huge part of pharmacy profession and is really passionate about what she does.

November 19th, 2009:Bowling and snacks at Goldy's Game room in Coffman!

December 2009:

December 3rd, 2009:Pharmaceutical sales specialist Kristyne Schlink from AstraZeneca will be speaking to the club about pharmaceutical sales and a representative from the Muscular Dystrophy Association will be speaking about the opportunity to be a summer camp volunteer.

January 2010:

January 28th, 2010: Nuclear Pharmacist for Siemans will be talking to us about what nuclear pharmacy is and what a nuclear pharmacist does. Also possible club volunteer opportunities will be talked about.

February 2010:

February 11th, 2010:The pre-pharmacy club will be hosting Steve Grapentine a pediatrics pharmacist at Children's Hospital of Minnesota.

February 25th, 2010:After last minute complications with our speaker this meeting will be a social meeting. We will be playing board games and getting to know other members. Club T-shirts are in! If you ordered one they will be at this meeting so bring your $10.

March 2010:

March 11th, 2010:Geriatrics Pharmacist will be speaking about how he got into geriatrics and what he daily responsiblities are.

March 25th, 2010:Cancelled

April 2010:

April 8th, 2010: Dr. Schommer will be talking about changes and trend in the pharmacy workforce. Following his presentation current pharmacy students will take us on a tour of the College of Pharmacy.

April 22nd, 2010: We will be holding elections for 2010-2011 board members at this meeting. Please contact current board members for more information about a position you are interested in running for. Email Tara if you would like to run for an officer position, and come vote for our next years board members!

May 2010:

May 6th, 2010: Annual end-of-the picnic in Van Cleve Park! We will barbecue hamburgers/hotdogs and have a chance to chat with other members and do some fun activities. Come enjoy an afternoon outside with us, hope to see you there!

*Note: Due to chance of Rain we will be having the meeting in Coffman 303 and ordering pizza and playing games

September 16th, 2010: First meeting of the year! Come and learn what the Pre-Pharmacy club is all about!

September 30th, 2010: At this meeting we will have Dr. Linda Strand come and talk to us about Pharmaceutical Care and the future of the pharmacy profession.

October 14th, 2010: We will have Sara Lofstrom talk with us about the admissions process. This is your chance to ask her all your questions!

October 28th, 2010: We will have Dianna and Jennifer who are pediatric pharmacy residents at Children's Hospital.

November 11th, 2010: We will have Dr. Robert Straka who is a Research Pharmacist.

December 9th, 2010: This will be our last meeting of fall semester.

January 27th, 2011: We will have a meeting about the admissions process and hear from Sarah Loftstrom and a panel of pharmacy students.

February 10th, 2011: We will have Dr. Amy Busker who is an MTM pharmacist at Fairview.

February 24th, 2011: We will welcome back Nabeel, a nuclear pharmacist for Siemans.

March 10th, 2011: We will have Dr. Shannon Reidt, one of the practicing faculty at the U of M College of Pharmacy, talk to us about her practice as a home care pharmacist and what it means to be a practicing faculty member.

March 24th, 2011:Instead of a traditional meeting, we will be going bowling at Goldy's Gameroom!

April 7th, 2011: We will have Dr. Laura Hubbard as our guest speaker!

April 21st, 2011: At this meeting we will hear from a panal of pharmacy students, and we will also hold board member elections for next year! So contact Emily if you are interested in running for a position on next year's board!

May 5th, 2011: Last meeting of the year! We will be having a bbq/picnic at Van Cleve park as long as the weather is nice. Otherwise our backup plan will be to still have a fun time at our usual room in Coffman.
