The Johann Stumpf Family

Johann Stumpf was born on 25 December 1837 in Sindorf, Kreis Bergheim, Rheinland, Prussia. His parents were Adolph Stumpf and Anna Margaret Rixen. Adolph and Anna Margaret had 10 children. Adolph died 14 August 1846 and Anna Margaret emigrated with 6 of her children, arriving in New York on 30 September 1850. They came to Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin and settled on 160 acres of land insection 35 of Berry township.

John Stumpf served as a private in Company K of the 51st Wisconsin Infantry from 26 February 1865 to 4 May 1865.

First Marriage

Johann married Anna Margaret Dresen, daughter of Theodore and Katherine Dresen on 18 July 1861. Anna Margaret was born about 1836 in Rheinland Prussia.

Anna Margaret died 20 May 1865, shortly after the birth of her third child.

Second Marriage

On 1 May 1866, Johann Stumpf married Katherine Ploog, a widow with a daughter, Sibilla.

In 1868 Johann and Katherine moved to Morrison County, Minnesota.

Death

John Stumpf died December 26 1910 and is buried in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Pierz, Morrison County, Minnesota.

Katherine Stumpf died on 14 June 1916 and is buried in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Pierz, Morrison County, Minnesota.

Death Claims Several of Them During Past Week
In the Death of John Stumpf of Pierz, who died at his home in that town Monday evening of Bright's disease at the age of 73 years, Morrison county loses another of its old and greatly respected citizens. John Stumpf was born in Rhenish Prussia December 25, 1837, moving to Dane county, Wisconsin when 12 years of age. He came to this county in 1868 settling on a farm near Pierz. In 1877 he was elected as a member of the house of representatives. He also served as supervisor of this town and as chairman of board of county commissioners. He served with credit, having been a member of the board from 1883 to 1895. The deceased had friends in all parts of the county, who will be sorry to hear of his demise. Deceased is survived, besides his wife, by seven children — four daughters. Mrs. Jacob Blake, Mrs. Hubert Bares, Mrs. Herman Bentfeld, of Pierz; Mrs. John Rassier of Little Falls, and three sons, Frank, Henry and Theodore Stumpf, all of Pierz. The funeral was held from St. Joseph's Catholic church of Pierz, Thursday morning, Rev. J. J. Steigler, officiating, and internment was in St. Joseph cemetery. The obsequies were largely attended, a number from this city being present.

Mrs. Catherine Stumpf, a pioneer resident of Morrison County, passed away Wednesday morning at 7 o’clock at the home ofher daughter, Mrs. J. J. Rassier, from apoplexy, after a brief illness. She was 76 years of age.

Deceased was born in Germany in 1840. She came to this country with her parents in 1848. In 1866 her marriage to John Stumpf of Madison, Wis., took place and the following year they moved to this state, locating at Pierz, where they resided until after the death if Mr. Stumpf, in 1911. She then came here to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. J. J. Rassier, where she has been living since.

Surviving the deceased are three sons and four daughters. The sons are Frank, Theodore and Henry of Pierz and the daughters Mrs. H. J. Bares of Pierz, Mrs. H. J. Bentfeld of Genola, Mrs. J. J. Rassier and Mrs. J. M. Blake of this city. She also leaves fifty-nine grand-children and twenty-three great grand-children, two brothers and two sisters.

The funeral will be held at Pierz Monday morning at 9:30. Rev. Victor Rassier, O.S. B. of Mt. Angel, Ore., a grandson of the deceased will officiate.
