Funeral Rites for John Goblirsch Sr.
Passed Away Quietly at
His Home at 6:45 a.m.
Monday of Heart Failure
Funeral services for John Goblirsch Sr. are being held this morning from St.
Anne's Catholic church of which he was a member, after his death Monday morning.
Requiem High Mass was in charge of Rev. Thomas Diehl.
Mr. Goblirsch had retired Sunday night in his usual manner. About 2:30 he had awakened and was attended by his daughter Mary. He then fell asleep again, a sleep from which he perhaps never awakened again, for at 6:45 a.m., it was found he had been called by his Maker. Death was caused by heart failure. He had attained the age of 78 years, eight months and 17 days. He had been ill for the past year.
The deceased was born in Austria October 20, 1867 of parents John and Elizabeth Goblirsch. When he was six months of age, he came to the United States with his parents in 1868, who settled first at New Ulm and later homesteaded at Lafayette. Here he grew to manhood, assisting his parents and attending the rural schools.
On November 24, 1891, he was united in marriage to Miss Anne Muehlbauer at the parish of St. George, near New Ulm. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Goblirsch purchased land in New Avon township northeast of what is now Wabasso where they farmed until 1927 when they retired to Wabasso.
During his residence in New Avon, he served for 23 years as supervisor and clerk of district 97 for 18 years. Upon their arrival in this vicinity there was as yet no village of Wabasso platted and they attended church at Morgan. Upon platting of Wabasso, Mr. Goblirsch was deeply interested in the organization of a church of his faith here and thus became one of the first to help organize St. Anne's parish. He was also a charter member of both St. Joseph's COF and St. George's Catholic Aid Society.
Thus, a quiet man by nature, nevertheless, he was one of the early builders of this community. To those with whom he associated he was known to be sincere and progressive and built his home through the years from the prairie country times to the present, earning the respect of all.
He was the father of eight children, seven of whom survive. One daughter, Frances, died in infancy. Surviving are Frank; Henry, Gary, So. Dak., Mrs. Katie Altermatt; John; Miss Mary; Charles and Louis. All, with the exception of Henry, reside in or near Wabasso. Surviving also are 28 grandchildren, one sister and five brothers. The latter are Catherine Goblirsch, Adam and Joe of New Ulm; Charles of Minneapolis; Anton of Lafayette and Andrew of Genoa.
Pallbearers were five grandsons, Leonard, Morris, Raymond and Alphonse Goblirsch; Harold Altermatt and Frank Byli.
