Breeding Log #001 (July 2, 2007)

Male: Fighter Plakats (5 Star)
Female: Fighter Plakats (male sibbling)
Breeder: Aloha Betta (HI)
Original Strain: Crazy Dog Betta

07/02/2007

Set up four 10 gallon tanks with about 4-5" of water and set heater at 80F.  I used normal tap water with about 0.5ml of Prime and Maracyn as recommended to help keep the eggs from getting fungus.
I also threw in one almond leaf per tank and let it float wherever it wants and a 1/2 cut styrofoam cup (pictures later).

07/04/2007

I put some java moss, naja grass and hornworts so the female will have some places to hide if the male gets to hostile.   I also added a cup at one of the corner as suggested by a friend (Popeye), this allow more protection for the female and it works.

07/05/2007

Late in the evening, I introduced the four males in the four tanks.
  • Male 1: Plakat fighter blue/green (Aloha Betta's 1st generation)
  • Male 2: Plakat fighter blue (Crazy Dog Betta)
  • Male 3: Red/Gold dragon (Aloha Betta's 1st generation)
  • Male 4: Gold platinum (Aloha Betta's 1st generation)

07/06/2007

Late in the afternoon, I introduced three females to the tanks.   Unfortunately, the yellow female I have was sick so I have to treat her which means that the platinum male has no mate.
  • Female 1: Plakat fighter green/blue (Aloha Betta's 1st generation)
  • Female 2: Plakat fighter green (Aloha Betta's 1st generation)
  • Female 3: Red/Gold dragon (Aloha Betta's 1st generation)

07/07/2007

Late in the afternoon, pair #1 begins to enbrace and it took a while for them to get a hang of it.  I left them to their business and took the female out the next morning.   She was in pretty good shape when I net her out, I put her in a half gallon jar with a sprinle of salt just in case.

07/08/2007

The second plakat pairs spawned, the female was a lot smaller so there was not too many eggs.  I took the female out the next day.  I saw the beginning of the spawning process but had to leave so I did not know if there were complications or not.

07/09/2007

The eggs from the first spawn are hatching as I saw the eggs boucing around :-)

07/10/2007 (Day 1)

The eggs from the 2nd spawn are also hatching.
I'll do the same for this spawn as the other, so I will not mention it much from here on.

07/11/2007 (Day 2)

I removed both of the males to their own jars late in the evening.  They each go to a half gallon jar with lightly sprinkled salt.  The next morning, I gave each some daphnia before I go to work.  I also put some daphnia in the fry tanks as a test.

07/12/2007 (Day 3)

Early in the morning, I put some green water in there for the fry.  I am planning to put some vinegar eels in this afternoon and microworms in a day or two.   Once the microworms are in, I may also add an apple snail to help consume the left over food.  I would also like to introduce a sponge filter because I did not set them up initially.

07/13/2007 (Day 4)

I fed the fry with some cultured vinegar eels and microworms.
vinegar eels
Using what I think is a great technique for harvesting vinegar eels, I used an eye dropper to pick up around 5 ml of water & eels and dropped it around the tank.
microworms
Using my finger, I moved it around the container to pick up the worms that have crawled up the side and dipped them in small amount of aged dechlorined water.   Once I am done, most of the micrworms will be at the bottom, some of the gunks are floating at the top.  I use an eye dropper to pick up the worms at the bottom and drop it around the tank.

07/14/2007 (Day 5)

I fed the fry with some cultured vinegar eels and microworms twice a day.  I feed when get up and feed again about an hour before go to sleep.  It's a relative based on my mood :-)
I got some apple snails from Sue McMillan and added two to each of the fry tanks late this evening.

07/15/2007 (Day 6)

I fed the fry with some cultured vinegar eels and microworms twice a day.   Today I have also turned the two females over to my friend so he get them conditioned and bred in about one to two weeks.   My friend Dr. Tung Hoang told me that after the second spawn or so, the females usually released a lot more eggs :-)

07/16/2007 (Day 7)

I fed the fry with some cultured vinegar eels and microworms this morning and added some daphnia to each of the fry tanks.  I am thinking about adding some green or cherry shrimps to the fry tanks too.  I'll wait for a while and see if the water needs some extra help.

07/17/2007 (Day 8)

Today I fed the fry mostly vinegar eels with a small amount of microworms in the morning and strictly eels in the afternoon.  I am not sure if this for plakat fry only or what, but their body have light and dark stripes like a tiger :-)

07/18/2007 (Day 9)

This morning I only have time to feed the fry vinegar eels.   I am going to feed them vinegar eels and microworms tonight and start hatching baby brine shrimps (bbs).   By day 11 or so, they should be munching on bbs.

07/19-2007 - 02/15/2008

Lost track of things (sorry!)

02/16/2008

Well, after an adventurous and crazy summer, only 2 fish survived from each of the batch. I now have 4 juvenile/young adults fish and luckily, it turned out to be 2 males and 2 females. I have not jarred them yet, they seem to be getting along with each other just fine w/o any major fights yet.
