St Mary's from Oriel Lane

In the shadow of a Wren church,

a trotting horseman and startled

wagon pass on the narrow dirt

street. Two dogs chase after the

rider as if pursuing an automobile.

But this is a time when no

building is taller than the highest

steeple. Foot paths are crowded

with horse drawn carts and carriages,

creating commotion, inspiriration for

Haydn and comedy for Sheridan.

Blue sky, not fog drenched gloom,

is recorded as carefully as this exact

location where St. Mary's steeple is as

steadfast and as sturdy as Christian belief.

It reigns over a world moving in a

manic minuet, starting a new century.
