Still Life

The something missing is the blind man

who felt into place each item. Who licked his

finger to shed the clinging sugar from when

he heard the spoon's rest and dug it in at its

angle. Placed a handful of firm, not overly

ripe strawberries outside the scalloped dish;

scattered them by the knife he used to slice

open the orange, subtly wiped citrus juice

on the table cloth.

The picture suggests jam.

Something missing here is the blind man who

is off finding a pan. He will return to this table

and with the knife, top and slice the strawberries,

gore the orange, add sugar and cook this jam. It

is time, now, not to lose faith in this simplicity,

but only to leave to go and make some toast.
