Version (in the Original Italian)
To the Mayor of Siracusa,
the Assessore Regionale Beni Culturali e Ambientali e Pubblica Istruzione,
and to the Superintendenza ai BB.CC. e AA. di Siracusa
Objective: Proclamation by the participants of the International Symposium,
"From the Italian Vernacular Villa to Schinkel to the Modern House",
(14.-16. June 2002 in Siracusa) recommending the conservation and restoration of Villa Tremilia,
a country house near Siracusa (Tremilia di sotto - San Pietro ad Baias).
The participants of the symposium thank the organizers of the conference for their skillful coordination, and the city of Siracusa and the Assessorato Regionale ai BB.CC.AA. e. PP. II. for their extraordinary hospitality.
A theme central to this symposium is the influence of rural Sicilian architecture on Schinkel--one of the most important architects of all times. Throughout the history of architecture--via Schinkel and others--the appropriation of rural Sicilian architectonic and landscape forms has had a major influence on the development of modern and contemporary architecture.
The visit to Villa di Tremilia represents a crucial moment in the development of Schinkel's architecture. Thanks to the recent identification of a villa, to which Schinkel referred [i. e. 'to' in his drawing, entitled "Landhaus bei Syrakus"], the symposium participants have had the possibility to visit this site.
Considering the fundamental significance that this complex manifests in the history of architecture and its unfortunate present condition, the symposium participants recommend that competent authorities save and restore the building and its environs, and that the building's future use be compatible with its artistic and cultural value. Ideally, the complex should become an International Center for the Study of Architecture and Landscape Design.
To achieve this end, we, the participants of the conference, offer our availability and our scientific contribution.
