Schinkel's Inheritance and Twentieth-Century Architecture

Historians of modern and contemporary architecture, as well as many of their leading heroes, have frequently made reference to Schinkel's name and Nachlaß as one of their most relevant "starting points". However, through the decades, some significant differences can be traced when comparing texts and projects, interpretations, and built works. In the paper, a review will be developed concerning the most important theoretical and critical issues, and a few specifi case-studies will be analysed, among which that of the well-known Philip Johnson's Estate, New Canaan.
