I attended the February 18th meeting of the University Unitarian Universalists,
held in Room 353 of Coffman Memorial Union at the University of Minnesota.
In all there were 15 of us present.
The discussion leader was Virginia Wolf,
an English Professor at Stout State University in Wisconsin,
who is in training to become a UU minister.
Her theme was "All UU's Are Humanists, Aren't They?"
We explored the alleged conflicts between humanism and theism
within the UU movement.
This conflict disappears if "humanism" is expanded
to include many different beliefs
as long as they affirm "the inherent dignity and worth of every person".
With this understanding, the vast majority of those present
raised their hands to be counted as humanists.
If more UUs theists would define their theism as humanistic or person-centered,
perhaps our whole denomination could unite under the Humanist label.
