I just bought a little Chinese mini-lathe. Of course, the first project I wanted to do was five times as long as the lathe. A cane. So I removed the tailstock, bolted it to the toughest piece of scrap plywood I could find, and clamped that to the bench, far enough away to fit the cane. AND built a steady-rest to keep it from wobbling. And it worked!
