Show Review: Lookbook EP release

After the Myth closed earlier this year, I was thrown into such a panic. "Where, oh where, will the Ed Hardy crew go with their girlfriends now?" was a constant question for me around that time. Well, the answer is: they all went to the Entry tonight to grind up on each other next to me.

Joking aside, shows mean a lot to me now. Since taking the morning show in June, I've had to wake up at 5:00 every day, which really cuts into my chances to get out and see bands I love. I can't even begin to count the number of shows I've missed because it's a weekday or I've been too exhausted to get out. That's why the rare gigs I've had the chance to see since then - Black Moth, School of Seven Bells and Lookbook - mean so much more to me as a result.

And really, what better place is there to spend a frigid December night than in the cozy confines of the Entry? The night opened up with pop-punkers We Became Actors, whose impeccable energy and insaaaaanely tight melodies really set the tone of optimism for the night. The lyrics were upbeat, which was a welcome change to the spate of super-down "Winter" music that I've been playing on my iPod a lot lately. Think early (good) Green Day music with the party-upbeat-everything's-gonna-be-okay lyrics of The Hold Steady, and you've got a good opener. The crowd warmed up fast and stayed that way throughout the night.

Next up were Nyteowl, the organizers of the show and masterminds behind the "True To Form" remix EP that was released this evening. Jeremiah Conlon's electronic duo (and Radio K's Do You Party? heroes) really kicked things up, and played a nice complement to the impeccable beats spun by DJ Perrier between sets. There was dancing, frivolity, and fun in the air by the end of their set. Despite some early technical difficulties, they kept rolling and the payoff was well worth it.

And, finally, we come to Lookbook. Before the set, I caught snatches of conversations going around the room. Quite a few of them went along the lines of, "I've never heard this band, but someone told me I HAVE to see them. So I'm here." My own Lookbook obsession began quietly but intensely (like their set) after their "I Fear You, My Darkness" EP was released earlier this year and really kicked into high gear when their brand-new album, "Wild at Heart," found its way into Radio K's hot little hands. I can't add much to the heaps of well-earned adoration of Grant Cutler and Maggie Morrison, except to say that they translated both their slower, more ambient broodings and their punky dance freakouts to the stage well.

To prep before the show, I watched a few videos on Youtube and had a few questions, foremost of which was, "can they keep it up every song?" The short answer is YES. Between Maggie's sultry stage presence and theatrical vocal delivery (which, for me, seemed a mix between Peter Murphy and Cyndi Lauper, which IS a compliment) and Grant's rock-solid beats and guitar work, it was impossible to tear my eyes from the stage. As they circled each other on stage, pausing only to swoop in with an ungodly good hook or stab, I realized that Lookbook epitomize everything that has made Twin Cities music brilliant for so many years. True electro heroes, Lookbook are.

Now that I'm at home and cooling down from the show, I can only repeat the advice that so many friends, roommates, bandmates, and family members seem to have given out before this particular show: next time Lookbook roll around, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES stay at home. I'm so glad they continue to rock Radio K's Top 7, as they give me a reason to rock out on dreary Monday mornings.

I'm off to bed, but I'll see you guys bright and early Monday morning. Expect some Lookbook, y'all.
