Stegor is one of four detachable tentacles radiating from the Bat Lenny hub. Namely me - Greg Mathieson. My compositions are based mostly around guitar and bass, but I try to fill in the gaps with textural keyboards, percussion and gizmos. I don't fancy myself a "guitarist" or even a "musician" - perhaps a non-musician in the vein of Brian Eno (at the risk of mentioning him in the same sentence as myself). I try to make up for my lack of technical expertise with a little ingenuity, clever hooks and a lot of "punching in".
Bryan Baker of Gajoob Magazine sez:
"...After the first listen this instantly became one of my favorite all-time cassette albums. Complex studio compositions with recurring themes throughout, theatrical vocals taking on an assortment of characters, a tremendous ear for bringing seeming disparate timbres together, along with odd, playful melodies.... You simply must get ahold of this tape!"
Thanks, Bryan. Anyway, most of my tapes are recorded on a Tascam 424 4 track cassette recorder, with some parts recorded on a Tascam 8 track reel to reel. Other equipment - some owned some borrowed:
- A really cheap Les Paul copy - Bought it used in '82 for $120.00. Payed way too much but it was the best 120 I ever spent. Stepped on the neck in the middle of the night. Snapped like a twig. A little Elmers and a couple wood screws brought it back better than ever.
- A Lotus bass - Weighs about 80 lbs.
- A Casio MT65 - Real cheesy. But kinda cool if it's effected right.
- A Yamaha nylon sring acoustic guitar with steel strings on it. You could drive a small truck between the strings and the fretboard. If that's your idea of a good time.
- An Arp Magica - 20,000 pesos at a gift shop in Mexico. Actually it's like a homemade autoharp
- A Ceramic Dove whistle - Just what it sounds like.
- A generic hollow body electric guitar - Probably from Sears or something.
- A Pro-One analog synth - Great spacey effects.
- A Roland digital synthesizer - can't remember the name (belongs to Bernard).
- An Alesis HR16 drum machine - Rather use real drums, but I don't have the facilities or the abilities. And as Darryl Draeger of Hermano Guzanos said "It won't get drunk and fall off it's stool".
- A little bit of midi but not much.
- Much more misc. arcane and archaic devices.
