About the Club
The University of Minnesota Nordic Ski Club exists to give students an opportunity to pursue Nordic Skiing conveniently and inexpensively, with other U of M ski enthusiasts. The club is open to skiers of every ability level, and every level of commitment. The club has members who never skied before joining the club, and members who compete at extremely high levels (several athletes have sponsorships; one won the City of Lakes Loppet). Club members vary greatly in how much time they commit to skiing.
There's no pressure to commit time, race, or improve; the club is very social and welcoming, but for those who seek a competitive ski environment, there are plenty of chances to get on snow and train. To achieve this, club members host and attend a number of events every season. During first semester, the team organizes very casual group runs and weekly Frisbee games. Over Thanksgiving break, a small group traditionally goes to West Yellowstone to welcome the snow season. The team trip, over winter break, is always the highlight of the year. The trip is an 8-day excursion to Telemark Lodge and the nearby Birkie trails, ending on the Saturday of the Seeley Hills Classic race. During second semester, the club provides transportation from campus to a local ski area for practice every day, and transportation and lodging (if necessary) to a race every weekend, ending with the Birkie race in late February. After the snow melts, the team continues to play Frisbee once weekly all spring and summer.
