click to view/hear a lightning-fast version of the talkI did a guest speaker gig this afternoon (3/26/10) in a class on Social Aspects of Computing. As always, I was talking about copyright. But today for the first time I used the "audience response system" or "clickers" that our library has available for instructional staff. The experience was really positive. Students perked up and paid attention, thought about some deeper questions, and I got some immediate feedback on my teaching. Miraculously, the clickers, my wireless mouse, and the multimedia content I'd embedded in the slides ALL WORKED at once.

Pre-Surveys
(all done at the beginning of the talk)
Post-Surveys
(mostly done at points in the middle
of the presentation, where they were relevant)
Do You Own Any Copyrights? Pre

My comment after this: "65% of you are WRONG! You all own copyrights!" They laughed.

Do You Own Any Copyrights? Post

And 20 minutes later, they all remembered! Yay!

How many copyrights have you infringed today? Pre

My comment after this: "Some of you have been BitTorrenting today." And a few said out loud that they had! At which point I advised them that telling potential authority figures this stuff is not a great idea!
Also, glad I made "I have no idea!" an option; it proved necessary.

How many copyrights have you infringed today? Post

I did point out after these results that it was possible, but unlikely, that they had not done anything today that would count as an infringement.

How much do you know about copyright? Pre

Options: Tons, A Good Amount, Less than I'd Like, and Nothing, Really

How much do you know about copyright? Post

50 minutes later, more knew "A Good Amount" - and I'm hoping that that's a different 17% who know "Less than I'd Like". Better yet, only a few now felt they knew WAAAAY more than they wanted to. Success!

Unsuccessful Question
When will copyright in a work you create today, expire?

"Assuming most of you are around 20, and will (conservatively) live to be around 70."

2130

WRONG format. Only one respondent. Shoulda done a real fill-in-the-blank or something.

Opinion Questions

The lead-in to these questions was a quick discussion of search engine indexing of web pages and images, the Google Books project, and the DIY Book Scanner

Should you be able to scan books you own?
Should you be able to rip CDs and DVDs you own?
Should you be able to scan books and rip CDs and DVDs you do not own?

I asked them why the differences between CDs/DVDs and books - answers volunteered included "We don't care as much about books!" and "It's hard to read a book on the screen."

As to this third question, I said I didn't think there were always clear answers, but that this is something everyone should think about.
