Minnesota Brings Some Hardware Home from Dallas, Texas!

The University of Minnesota Men’s Volleyball Team won the Silver Bracket to finish 17th in the nation.  Going 8-2 on the weekend, the Golden Gophers relied on outstanding team play to find success against the best teams in the country.

Seeded 32nd to enter the tournament, Minnesota knew it had something to prove and displayed that right away on day one.  After falling to UCLA (seeded 8th) in three games, Minnesota bounced back with a convincing, two-game upset over Arizona St.  To finish the day, the Gophers cruised to an easy victory over the University of Cincinnati which gave them a second place finish in their pool.

To begin day 2, Minnesota fell to Utah Valley St. in a heartbreaking challenge match.  With the loss, Minnesota was placed in a consolation pool with two national powers: Arizona and Maryland.  However, Minnesota showed its resiliency by defeating both opponents in two games.  Arizona, seeded 9th, failed to score 20 points in either game against the determined Gophers.

Day three brought only wins for the surging Golden Gophers.  Following a two game victory over UC-San Diego, Minnesota found itself in trouble after a game one loss to11th seeded Penn St. University.  Once again, Minnesota bounced back by defeating Penn St. 25-16 and 15-11 to close out the match.  Stanford University was next in Minnesota’s path to the silver championship.  The Gophers had little trouble with Stanford dismantling them 25-11 in game two.  After the convincing victory, Minnesota prepared itself to take on a familiar Indiana University team in the silver championship.  Indiana hung with the Gophers for awhile, but Minnesota proved to be too physical and seized the championship with a 25-21, 25-21 victory.
Minnesota would like to thank its four graduating players for a great season.  Your dedication to the club both on and off the court is greatly appreciated.  Thanks Jared, Joe, Kasen and Matt!

Minnesota Makes Some Noise at MIVA’s

After a grueling 12 hour drive the University of Minnesota reached Columbus, Ohio eager and ready to play! The first day of pool play was practically flawless for Minnesota, who defeated any team that stepped on the court. The Gophers ended day 1 with high spirits, great intensity, and a 4-0 finish! On Sunday, Minnesota brought back the same intensity and easily defeated the University of Iowa, their first opponent of the day, in 2 games. Up next, for the third playoff face-off this year, was the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The Gophers came out in game 1 with a tremendous effort and defeated Oshkosh 25-16. Minnesota used the energy and momentum from game 1 and played a tough second game but dropped 22-25. The third and final game of the match was a sideout battle, the Gophers played very hard but were unable to walk away with a victory losing 11-15.

Minnesota Falls Quickly at BTMVA Championships

For the University of Minnesota Men’s Volleyball Club, it was a short and unsatisfying trip to the University of Illinois for the BTMVA Championships. The Gophers began pool play on Saturday easily defeating the University of Iowa in 2 games. The Gophers carried the momentum from their first win of the day into their second match against the top team in the country, the University of Illinois Fighting Illini. Minnesota fought the good fight but was unable to achieve success dropping the match in 2 games. The first round of the tournament bracket proved to be another tough challenge for Minnesota facing off against the Ohio State University. Despite a tremendous effort, the Gophers dropped game 1 and 2: 24-26, 20-25.

Minnesota Unable to make it Over the Hump

The University of Minnesota Men’s Volleyball Club found itself in familiar territory this weekend. Hoping to wash away the memories of their first trip to Iowa this year, the Gophers came out with great intensity during the first day of pool play. The Gophers dropped only 1 game all day with a 4-0 match finish. The Sunday playoff round began with a 2 game defeat over UW-Eau Claire, earning the Gophers a spot in the semi-final match. A slow start in the first game against a solid Western Illinois team resulted in a 26-28 loss. The Gophers made a strong push early in game 2 but were unable to hold back Western Illinois dropping the match 20-25. For the second straight tournament the Gophers finish in 3rd place.

Next Up: BTMVA Championships hosted by the University of Illinois.

Gophers Revisit Success at the Badger Classic

After the less than ideal finish at the BTMVA Round Robin, the University of Minnesota Men’s Volleyball Club experienced some rejuvenated success at the Badger Spring Classic, hosted by the University of Wisconsin. The Gophers went undefeated in pool play on Saturday morning, easily defeating their competition (Lakeland B, University of Wisconsin Eau-Claire and Club Wausau). Club Wausau posed little threat again to the Gophers when they faced off in the first round of playoffs. After a first round win, the Gophers found themselves in the semi-finals facing the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Eager for redemption after their championship loss against Oshkosh at their home tournament, the Gophers came out with great intensity but were unable to achieve victory earning a third place finish.
