Synopsis of Research Interests

My research interests lie in animal signalling and cognition. I am interested in questions that deal with signalling and the processing of signals in the context of the ecology of the animal: What information is conveyed in signals? How does it influence the behaviour of individuals, e.g., mating decisions and signalling strategies? How do animals process the signals they receive and ‘understand’ their content? How does the environment in which animals signal modify the content of signals and how do animals interpret the information content of these modified signals? My work combines multiple approaches, including field recordings, laboratory experiments, modelling and neurophysiology, in order to obtain a holistic understanding of the neuroethology, ecology and evolution of behaviour. My doctoral work investigated chorusing in katydids and examined the phenomenon of acoustic synchrony. My research here will deal with sound source segregation in gray treefrogs.
