The International Struggle For Socialism

Billions of people around the globe are today facing famine, poverty, environmental destruction and war. At the same time, corporate profits loom large over the heads of the desperate masses. The recent tsunami in Asia exposes the greed of the multinational banks, who keep many of those countries forever in debt to the rich West. Even in the U.S., the inexcusable failure of the government to protect especially the poor citizens in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina is proof enough that money and profits are the rule of the day. These horrors are a result of the capitalist system.

Socialist Alternative is the U.S. section of the Committee for a Workers' International, or CWI. While global capitalism continues to expand its domain, the struggle against the vulture of capitalism must be global as well. The CWI, since its foundation 30 years ago, has been working to build international socialist forces to overthrow the rule of big business and global capitalism. We currently have sections in over 35 countries around the world.
Come to a discussion with local members of Socialist Alternative about the work of the CWI and the global struggle for democratic socialism.

Speakers:
Katie Quarles on the fight against capitalism in Europe. Katie spent four years working with Sozialistische Alternative, the CWI's German section, helped lead a 4,000 strong school student strike against the Iraq war, and has participated in major protests like in Genoa, Italy in 2001 against the G8, and other events throughout the continent.

Alec Johnson on the struggle for socialism in the developing world. Alec recently attended the 2005 World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil, as a delegate for the CWI from Minneapolis.
