WHAT IS MAPS?

The Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students is pipeline program sponsored by SNMA (Student National Medical Association), to directly serve minority students through mentorship, education, and guidance. The mission of MAPS is to help minority pre-med students explore various opportunities within the health profession by implementing informational programs, providing helpful academic resources, and organizing volunteer opportunities. MAPS will also strive to create awareness about healthcare disparities among minorities and work towards eliminating them. The purpose of our organization is to offer resources, support, and information to minority students that are interested in health care. We will also provide various opportunities for pre-med students, health professionals, and graduate students to network and interact with one another.

ACTIVITIES

SNMA Regional and National Conferences

Our chapter will annually attend both regional and national conferences to allow students to network with other motivated individuals that are interested in medicine, studying medicine, or are already physicians. This yea's SNMA Regional Conference is at the University of Missouri-Columbia, October 30 - November 1, 2009.

Physician and Medical Student Panels

This is an opportunity for students to network and gain more insight on a career in medicine.

Maps Volunteer outreach program

As future health professionals, it is important for MAPS members to be actively involved in the community and aware of health issues surrounding us today. We will frequently organize group volunteering projects (members are highly encouraged to participate).

Healthcare Disparities

We will mediate different discussions on health issues facing minorities such as mental illnesses-- the social detriments of health and facilitating the discussions about the stigmas surrounding mental illness amongst minority communities--and cancers in minority communities

...and much more.
