3D cutaway drawing of the birdhouse with IR camera mounted to the roof.

This project was started to be able to observe the nesting of “our” backyard Eastern Bluebirds which return every spring. A camera was chosen which could record in complete darkness using infrared lights (a day/night CCD IR bullet camera). We mounted it to the roof of the birdhouse (see drawing) and connected it to a computer. Using software that detects motion, we were able to record all of the action.

See how the nest is formed, watch the male feed the female while she sits on the nest, see how the eggs are disposed of after hatching, watch the babies grow, and, finally fledge. Click the link below to go to the movies!
