Songs of the Week

It's a crazy/beautiful weekend: one of my favorite movies, it also sports a highly emotional soundtrack, full of songs with musical complexity, lyrical intrigue, and variety of all sorts.  From Gray, Torrini and the Warhols, to the Spanish-Rock of Mellow Man Ace -- it's all here.

Artist: David Gray
Title: This Year's Love
Length: 4:05

This song is used at one of the key moments of the film: when they're indicating quite a while has gone by in Nicole and Carlos' relationship, chronicling some of the time spent together.  It's sweet and soft, warm and cozy.  And call me soft, but someday, I want a romance where this song could be used, quite appropriately, on its soundtrack.

Artist: Emilianna Torrini
Title: Who am I?
Length: 3:22

until I had no hope -- Should it hurt to be free, it's what I need to pull myself together.

Angelic quality to this song; vocal qualities reminiscent to Bjork, except not at all.  Beautiful song, and if I might say so, I think quite good on its own.  But of course, it's always from "Crazy/Beautiful", and hence, I love it.

Artist: Dandy Warhols
Title: Sleep
Length: 5:57
Credit goes to: "crazy/beautiful"

The extended play of your most vivid dream.  Twinkling instrumentals -- guitar, keyboard, and violin.  The song flies by, yet it is truly a six-minute guitar diary.  Few lyrics.  "Well I could sleep forever, but it's of her I dream.  If I could sleep forever, I could forget about everything."   That is about it, lyrically - this song takes its form from its layered Warhol-ish guitar and synth sounds.  I strongly suggest you find it -- not the shorter version, either.  This one.

Artist: Mellow Man Ace
Title: Ten La Fe
Length: 4:01
Credit goes to: "crazy/beautiful"

I hear this song and I instantly think of the movie - early mornings rising, driving to school on a smelly bus, the heat of the day already pounding down from the pale-lit sky.  If there is more of a parallel to this summer, I need to hear about it.  I've never really listened to Spanish Rock before, save what Carolyn has played for me.  I could see myself getting into it, pretending I was cool.  But not in that trendy, world-music sort of way; to me, it's not world music if it has the word "rock" tagged onto it.  Therefore, if it's [insert random country here]-rock, it's still Rock 'n Roll.  Call me Bob Seger or Billy Joel, but c'est la f'n vie.
