 Attendance for the online classes is taken on the Internet, either full credit for all work or 1/2 credit for 1/2 of the work.  Attendance for face-to-face classes and meetings is taken in class at the beginning of each class session.  If you are more than ten minutes late, you receive 1/2 credit for that 50-min. period.  This page describes attendance and make-up policies.

Attendance Grade

 

 Attendance in this course and section is very important.  Why?  Much of what you learn will be developed through your interactions with others.  That is what much of both online and F2F classes are about: expressing your ideas, giving feedback to others, and getting it from them.  In addition, several weeks (or the equivalent) of our classes will be spent in hands-on, practical application of learning mythology: actually going to museums and/or theaters to see, hear, and feel mythology.   I ask that you attend online and F2F classes regularly (or do substitute work when you miss), and that you try to attend the cultural events with the class or on your own in an equivalent form.  However, if you are willing to do extra work outside of class, you can also treat this course as a sort of semi-independent study by regularly doing "make-up" work.  

We have an average of three classes each week.  Most are bulletin board classes - usually about two bulletin board classes a week.  You may do them anytime before the weekly deadline.  If you do only half of them, or half of one of them, you will only get half credit.  The in-person meetings are classes, too.  Because they usually last several hours, they are worth 3-5 X's each.  If you miss them, you may spend an equivalent amount of time doing them yourself, either by going to the appropriate place on your own (e.g., a museum or play), an equivalent place, or an online place or private activity of a similar type for the required time.    
Anyone going 2 weeks with no attendance activity will be dropped from the class.

Make Ups &
Extra Credit

You may make up missed attendance by doing extra work.  No make up is allowed of missed homework writing assignments.  However, you may complete extra-credit writing for a higher attendance grade to help counterbalance a lower weekly-papers grade (or simply to raise your overall grade).  Here is how make up and extra-credit writing work:

Make Up

Make up is like independent study.  However, I do not consider it quite as valuable a way of spending time as the same amount of time in class, working and discussing things with others.  Therefore, I would like two to three times as much work for independent make-up work as for class time (except for the first five listed below, as noted).  

            This means that you may make up 1 missed class hour (50 min.) as follows:

  • 1 X FOR 1/2 HR.: Do 1/2 of a class hr. (25-30 min.) of tutoring in or through the Writing Center, with both in-person and online tutoring available (see www.inverhills.edu/StudentResources/WritingCenter/index.asp).  Count the time and have a tutor sign a slip saying how much time you spent in actual tutoring.   (I.e., 1/2 hr. of this counts as 1 class hr.)

  • 1 X FOR 1 HR.--LIBRARY TUTORIAL: Do 1 class hr. of IHCC Library tutorial on how to use a library and find resources.  Show me the quiz results and tell me how much time you actually spent.  Please use the sheet of directions by English instructor Julia McGregor in Extra Writing Assignments at http://www.tc.umn.edu/~jewel001/WritingAssignments.htm.
         
  • 1 X FOR 1 HR.--LATE ASSIGNMENTS: (Fully-online class only:) Do 1 class hr. of make up for assignments that are too late to turn in.
            
  • 1 X FOR 1 HR.--LIVE PLAY: Do 1 class hour of a live, physical play, one that I approve, that ties in with our general subject for the semester (i.e., a two-hr. live play would count as two hours of class) and write about how it is mythic  for 300+ w.  Count writing time, as well.
          
  • 1 X FOR 1 HR.--CAMPBELL/MIA WEBS: Do 1 class hour of study of Joseph Campbell Web sites listed in the "Textbooks" page of this Web site as help for better understanding Campbell; or of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts myth Web site, also listed in the "Textbooks" page of this Web site as help for better understanding our in-person visit to the MIA (or as a replacement for missing the visit) and write about how it is mythic for 300+ w.  Count writing time, as well.
     
  • 1 X FOR 1 HR.--First 5 X's of any real or virtual museum visit: You may make up a missed museum visit for up to 5 X's (250 min.) on a one-for-one basis.  (However, after 5 X's of credit for any and all real or virtual museum visits, additional time spent in visiting museums counts only as half credit: 1 X for 2 class hrs.  See "Make Up a Missed Museum Visit" directly below.)  Count writing time, as well.

    You also may make up 1 missed class hour as follows:
                           
  • 1 X FOR 2 HRS.: Do 2 class hrs. of extra writing of additional homework-type papers (see HOMEWORK) (i.e., 2 hrs. of this counts as 1 class hr.).
         
  • 1 X FOR 2 HRS.: Do 2 class hrs. of combined reading and Comments (300+ w.) (see HOMEWORK) on a directly related reading (or documentary film on myth, such as the Joseph Campbell myth series) that has something to do with our general subject for the semester (e.g., in Eng 2235, "Mythic Heroes,"  the subject is myth).  (See also BOOKS & RESOURCES.)   (I.e., 2 hrs. of this counts as 1 class hr.)  Count writing time, as well.
         
  • 1 X FOR 2 HRS.:  After 5 X's of credit for any and all real or virtual museum visits, additional time spent in visiting museums counts only as half credit: 1 X for 2 class hrs.  For virtual museum visits, see "Make Up a Missed Museum Visit" directly below.  (However, you may make up a missed museum visit for up to 5 X's (250 min.) on a one hr.-for-one hr. basis.)  Count writing time, as well.

    You also may make up 1 missed class hour as follows:
                           
  • 1 X FOR 3 HRS.: Do 3 class hrs. of combined watching of, listening to, or doing something directly related, and Comments (300+ w.).  For example, you may watch directly-related videos, movies, and TV shows; write your own myth(s); or, if you wish, do a related activity (e.g., in Eng. 2235, "Mythic Heroes," you could make masks of famous mythic people, or create and write your own myth).  I'm open to suggestions.  After your watching/listening/doing/creating, please summarize/explain/comment on what you've read, seen, done, or created for 300+ words.  Count all of this time, including the 300+ words you write, too (you may write more than 300 w.).  (I've started a movie list in the "TEXTBOOKS & RESOURCES" page of this Web site and I'm open to additional suggestions.)  (I.e., 3 hrs. of this counts as 1 class hr.)

How To Make Up a Missed Museum Visit:

What to do:  Spend your time looking at exhibits with mythological themes.  Poke around and find things that relate to mythology or that you think of as having some kind of mythic meaning.  Write about it while you look or after you are done.  Give me what you wrote, along with a statement of the type of visit you made and the time you spent on it (see "1.-4." below). 

1. Class-organized group museum visit with guided tour: 6-9 pm plus travel time = 250 min. or 5 X's. 
(150-180 min. of actual touring; 400 written words on what you saw
(200 on tour with guide, 100 on tour with Richard, and 100 on self-guided tour); you may write as you visit or after.

Explanation: 1 hr. given by a tour guide, 1 hr. of self-touring (on your own individually), 30 min. of break and waiting time, 50 min. of travel time, and writing 400 w. about it during the visit) = 4 X's of class attendance.)

2. Guided tour, audiotape self-tour, or self-tour with no guide or audiotape - in a real museum on your own: 250 min. = 5X's.  You must tour the museum looking for mythic themes

Explanation: 1 hr. or more given by a tour guide, a personal audiotape device, and/or your own self-tour with no help.  This involves 250 min. total, which includes up to 60-70 min. travel time, taking notes while you tour, 15-30 min. break time, and the rest in touring.  Write 400 w. about it during the visit.  Up to 5 X's of class attendance.  COUNT AND REPORT YOUR TIME.  (Report touring time, break time, travel time, and any separate writing time.)

3. Virtual museum visit: 250 min. with no break, waiting time, and travel time = 5 X's.  List what you saw and write 400+ w. about it.  You must tour the virtual museum sites looking for mythic themes

Explanation: A virtual museum (online web sites) is rarely, if ever, as deeply affective as visiting original works of art in a museum.  However, quantity - and good sites - can help make up in part for missing a real museum.

Extra Credit

            You may receive extra credit by doing assignments as described immediately above in "Make Ups."  The credit is the same.  You simply build X's.
