(1) TEST FOR ONLINE LEARNING: To see whether you belong in an online course, take the test at www.inverhills.edu/Online/prospective/online_readiness.html. If you do not pass the test, you should not take this course.
(2) FIRST CLASS: Our first class will be held in a regular classroom at Inver Hills Community College. It counts as two or three class hours, and class attendance will be taken throughout the semester, virtual or physical, so please be sure to attend this first class. It is required for anyone within 100 miles of Inver Hills College. (If you are further away, contact me by email: see http://Richard.Jewell.net.) This first class will be held as follows:
|
FIRST CLASS IS IN-PERSON PHYSICALLY--YOUR PHYSICAL PRESENCE IS REQUIRED: Building, Time, Day, & Room: as shown in the IHCC Schedule of Courses and on the home page in "Updates." If you miss this first class, please print, fill out, and send to me the student "Information Sheet." |
(3) ORDERING BOOKS: See what books to order by going to "Textbooks & Other Sources."
(4) GENERAL STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE: The "Syllabus" describes the course briefly; other Web pages such as "Homework" and "Schedule" describe it in more detail. The course is organized on an historical time span, starting with ancient cultures and moving through Greek and Roman times and into the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
In practice, there are four basic types of activities for completing this class:
homework assignments (Hand in about two weekly papers per week, and do a final project paper.)
physical classes (Attend a 1st class at IHCC, and attend two to four visits to museums/theaters; replaceable by phone or virtual attendance)
Web bulletin-board discussions/virtual classes (Attend/post messages on one or two bulletin-board discussions each week.)
completion of a term paper (You must not only write it, but also revise it according to my comments, in order to pass the course.)
These activities are shown by specific assignment in the "Schedule" and "Virtual Classes" Web pages in some detail. Also attached to "Virtual Classes" is a "Table of Activities" that shows all the activities for the class on one sheet. Once you decide to take the class, one of the first things you should do is make a printed copy of the "Table" to keep in your textbook or notebook. To do so, go to "Schedule" and find the printable "Table of Contents." Then use your back/return arrow to return to this introductory home page.
(5) THE STEPS TO TAKE FOR STARTING THIS CLASS:
Home page: Read the home page carefully. On the home page is a link called "Updates." I show some changes, additions, and updates there in the first few weeks (but I'll send the main changes/updates to you by email--see next item).
Email: Be sure to send me your email address. Check your email twice a week or more. It is usually through email that I send updates, changes, etc. I also return your papers to you by email, so if you are not getting your papers back within a week or so of sending them, call or email me to see what is wrong.
Syllabus: Read the short summary of the class--also known as the "Syllabus"--carefully.
Books: See "Homework," or see "Schedule," "Week 1," and get the required books from the bookstore.
First night: Attend the first night of physical class on the IHCC campus. If you miss this first class, please print, fill out, and send to me the student "Information Sheet."
Homework table: From "Homework," print out the "Table of Activities" and put it in your humanities folder or main textbook.
Schedule: Read the first two weeks of the "Schedule" and compare it to your printed "Table of Activities." Print out the schedule, if you think it will help.
Bulletin/discussion board: Go to "Bulletin Boards" and start your first BB class: the first bulletin-board activity is due by midnight Thurs. of Week 1. (Please wait until the first day of classes to sign up for and complete your first BB assignment.)
First homework: Go to the schedule and do your Week 1 and Week 2 assignments--they are due by midnight Wed. of Week 2.
Please contact me if you have any problems (find contact information for me at http://richard.jewell.net).
(6) FINAL NOTE: I'd like to add that typically the members of an online class range from very experienced to relatively inexperienced. If you are inexperienced, you will need to be sure that you are able to regularly access the Web and that you are able to access and use the online class bulletin board. If you are one of the really experienced people, please have patience as I offer what you perceive as overly simple directions--I do so because some people do not yet know how to operate Webs and bulletin boards easily.
I'm looking forward to working with you and meeting you! If you need to contact me, just click on the "contact" link at the very bottom of any of these Web pages.
